Maximising Economic Production of CBM

Studies have shown that Indonesia has one of the largest CBM reserves in the world with a potential of 453 trillion cubic feet. The world's third- largest exporter of LNG - Indonesia is at a critical juncture in its economic and energy history with increasing value being placed on its CBM resources.

With rising demand for LNG across the continent, the government is actively offering new working area. Having offered already 23 CBM working area concessions in 2011, the government plans to offer another 13 new CBM area concession as well as 10 CBM cooperation contracts Indonesian energy to boost investment in this sector.

Petroleum giants like ExxonMobil, BP,Total, Eni have already started exploring the country's CBM resources and are looking at obtaining more concessions.

Recently in March , BP Indonesia and Total were both awarded CBM blocks in Kalimantan. According to reports, the partners will commit to investing over 19 million for the first three years exploration activities in the three blocks.

Will new & cost effective CBM technologies give Indonesia the opportunity to become the region's lowest energy-cost economy?

Successful CBM development often require thousands of shallow wells and a major de-watering process to release the gas trapped in the coal bed. At the exploration stage, it is crucial to evaluate the data from the wells carefully for the purpose of drilling and testing their potential.

As Coalbed natural gas exploration expands rapidly around the globe, CBM operators need new technologies to meet demand responsibly and quickly.

CBMtec 2011 takes advantage of the current limelight on Indonesia/ Asia's CBM development and is the ideal and timely gathering for the industry !

It will bring in key operators in the region to share their experiences and also innovative technology suppliers to impart their knowledge on new & cost effective ways to accelerate Asia's CBM development.

vi) Effective methods of CBM drilling and completion with 3 hours of comprehensive teachings and learning from Doug Henderson, Scientific Drilling International

Doug has been actively involved in drilling since the early surface directional drilling operations in coal seams in Australia in the early1990s and helped to pioneer and develop many of the methods used to this day. His most recent appointment was Manager-Directional Drilling for Lucas Drilling Services, Brisbane Australia where he was responsible for the execution of directional drilling projects including drilling engineering and directional drilling services from concept to completion.

Doug has a keen interest in directional drilling and continues to be actively involved in ways to improve current methodology.

Doug is currently engaged as the Global Business Development - Unconventional Gas for Scientific Drilling International (SDI), a Houston basedcompany, and operating around the world

A company partnering with state agencies to find out how much coalbed methane is left in some Powder River Basin wells just got a big infusion of money.

Laramie-based WellDog picked up $5 million in new debt and equity financing from investors, the company announced.

“It is clear that future energy exploration and development will rely on increasingly complex and sophisticated tools and techniques to access significant oil and gas reserves," said Terry Primeau of Focal Petroleum, also a new WellDog investor.

"At the same time, future exploration and development will require low cost, high volume solutions. WellDog has the tools, skilled personnel and experience to evaluate and recommend specific solutions to enhance conventional or nonconventional oil and gas reservoir productivity."

State electric company, Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), plans to build 18 coal-bed methane (CBM) plants in the western part of Indonesia in an effort to bring the areas more electricity at a lower price.Total estimated cost is

$250 million, which will bring 101 megawatts online to Sumatra and Kalimantan.

A study from the Energy Ministry estimates that Indonesia holds reserves of 453 trillion cubicfeet of the fuel,

enough to make it the largest CBM producer in the world.

There are currently no operating CBM plants in the country, but some are already under construction and

should come online, at least at partial capacity, this year. The remainder of the plants should be completed in 2012.

PT Energi Pasir Hitam Indonesia (Ephindo) wants to sell electricity generated from coal bed methane (CBM) to state-owned power company PLN. “We hope to sell it by 2011,” said Ephindo Board Chairman, Wahyudin Yudiana Ardiwinata, in Jakarta, yesterday.

Ephindo is currently drilling one of four coal bed methane wells four it owns in Sangatta, East Kalimantan. The gas potential is
yet unknown, but they estimate it reserves to reach trillions of standard cubic feet. The drilling results can only be known in the next 4 to 5 months. Ephindo is cooperating with General Electric to convert gas into electricity.

The Government plans to have a first CBM project next year. In 2015, CBM production could amount to 100 million standard cubic feet per day valued at US$ 2.5 million.
