Global PP Markets - A Changing Environment
PP is one of the most versatile of the bulk polymers due to a combination of good mechanical and chemical properties. Its applications are very wide and substituting many other polymers in terms of applications. Investors are expanding plants or building new capacities worldwide, targeting growth region in Asia & Europe.
"Borouge awards contract for 3rd expansion project...By the end of 2013, when the production starts, Borouge will be able to make up to 4.5 million tonnes a year of polyethylene and polypropylene for the Middle East and Asian consumption..."

Industry is in big transition. Western companies without good feedstock capabilities are looking to Asian and ME partners to enhance regional relationships and lower feedstock costs. Integrated complexes in the Middle East are coming on-stream and supplying to markets in Asia and Europe. What is the impact to producers without feedstock or market advantage? Is the market ready to consume all the planned capacities? With the coming on-stream of coal based PP in China, how will the market dynamics change?
As one of the world's leading manufacturing centres, Turkey's appetite for PP is well in excess of a million tons with growing dependence on imported materials to meet demand. Where and what are the emerging applications?
CMT's 5th Global Polypropylene and Tech Conference brings together leading industry buyers and sellers in one platform to discuss pertinent issues in fast developing industry. This is an excellent platform to meet global suppliers and buyers.

Turkey’s plastics imports hit a record high for the month of September, setting a figure above the trend line for the past ten years of imports. PP materials accounted for majority of the imports.
Additionally, the Middle East was the biggest source for Turkey’s overall plastics imports. Given the rising demand levels from Turkey and other countries such as fast-developing China, the 5th Global PP Markets Summit on the 2 & 3 December seeks to examine how & if Turkey can depend on the Middle East capacities in the long-term.
For this purpose, Bayegan Group will present first-hand insights on the outlook and trends in Turkey’s polymer market and impact on global industry, via a paper on “PP Trade & Distribution in Turkey & Neighboring Countries”. While Petkim will be sharing on the future of petrochemical development in Turkey, with a presentation entitled Review of Petkim’s Plan & Direction. The Turkish Plastics Manufacturers Research Development and Educational Foundation (PAGEV) will also provide insights on the Trends & Future development in Turkish Plastics Converting Industry.
Those keen to determine key application markets driving the trend, and emerging opportunities for investments and more from the above sessions at the summit can register here or contact leelin@cmtsp.com.sg.

Indian polymer producers have announced price reductions in polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE), as imports grow amid low domestic demand. Demand is low because during the festive season of Diwali, converters run plants at reduced capacity.
This trend is contrary to the rising petrochemical prices globally. In the global markets, as crude oil prices rise, polypropylene (PP) price has risen by US$30, and polyethylene (PE) prices have gone up by US$50 compared to previous month’s price amid supply constraints caused by maintenance shutdowns. This is the first time since May that prices have been reduced in India by producers.
Up till now, Indian polymer producers kept prices very high despite falling crude and global polymer price. Even with the current price reductions, polymer prices in India are still not at par with global levels. As newer capacities come onstream in India, pricing of polymers will be critical. The Indian market is slightly oversupplied due to expected added capacities and rise in imports as other regions face dwindling demand.

Robust demand from China has propelled PP prices to US$1285/MT in Asia in the week of September 6, 2010. CFR China offers from South Korea have been hiked to US$1340/MT levels, amid conclusion of September shipment deals from Taiwan at US$1300/MT. Middle Eastern producers have concluded deals for homo-PP injection and raffia with increases of US$50-110/MT above their August offer levels. In China, a major Middle Eastern producer concluded September deals for homo-PP over US$100/ton above August done deal levels.
Petro Rabigh has restarted its 700,000 tpa polypropylene (PP) plant, taken off line in early August because of a shortage of feedstock propylene. The Saudi producer has slashed export cargoes in September to build inventory, slashing allocations for the month by 60-70%, as per ICIS. Only key customers are being supplied, as the company has very limited stocks at present. Currently, the company is ramping up operating rates at the plant and expects to achieve full output by the end of the week. Exports of PP are expected to resume in October. PP prices in Turkey, Egypt defy volatile oil market
Published: 31 Aug 2010 22:54:58 PST
As the upward movement in spot propylene prices continues to push PP production costs higher, the global PP markets continue to defy the losses in the energy markets, with regular suppliers revealing their September PP offers with increases to Turkey and Egypt, supported by the increases they have made in the Chinese market for September cargoes.

Middle Eastern PP, PE offers surfacing for September
26/08/2010 (04:37)
New PP and PE offers from the Middle Eastern suppliers for September have been awaited in global markets as they are taken as a reference for the future direction of the market trend. The new offers are now slowly surfacing in China and Turkey at higher levels despite the shadow of falling crude oil prices.
In the PP market, a global producer has started to offer Middle Eastern PP raffia to China this week. Blaming tight supplies caused by the regional shutdowns at PP plants, the producer applied large hikes too as they lifted their new offers by $70/ton when compared to their previous offers.
Parallel with these developments in China, buyers in Turkey have recently started to receive offers for PP and PE from the Middle East. In the PP market, buyers are receiving new September offers from different Middle Eastern suppliers at levels standing at least $100/ton above the beginning of August. Suppliers have raised their offers to Turkey gradually throughout this month while there is stiff resistance to the new offer levels with buyers’ bids standing $50/ton below the recent offers.
Those interested to assess the above trend and to find out more on the latest industry updates should make plans to be at the 5th Global PP Markets & Tech conference in Istanbul on 2-3 Dec 2010 to hear leading industry producers & buyers share their expertise, expectations and views on where the marketing is heading.

Dow Basic Plastics Licensing and Catalysts has revealed that the Shenhua Baotou Coal Chemical Company is using its Unipol polypropylene (PP) technology.
Shenhua Baotou Coal Chemicals Company's 300 KTA Polypropylene Facility came online earlier this month in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the People's Republic of China. According to the company, its gasification technology converts coal into a synthesis gas (or syngas); syngas is used to produce methanol, which is transformed into olefins - a building block for producing polypropylene.
Unipol PP process technology is an all gas-phase process for producing a broad range of polypropylene resins. It’s simple design is both consistent in terms of product quality and energy efficient, requiring no equipment for handling, separating or recycling solvents. The system's fluidised-bed reactors and high-performance SHAC catalyst systems give manufacturers the flexibility to produce homopolymers, random copolymers and impact copolymers. PP is a versatile plastic used in packaging, durable goods, automotive parts, non-wovens, fibres and consumer applications. Read more about Dow’s Unipol Polypropylene (PP) Technology
The 5th Global PP Markets & Tech, to take place on 2-3 Dec in Istanbul is being put together to discuss all about PP technology innovations, and projects in China, as well as India, Turkey, Africa, Middle East, Russia, Latin America & USA.
