CRITICAL SHORTAGE OF R-PET SUPPLY, FEEDSTOCK CHALLENGES & OUTLOOK FOR THE REGION

Volatility in PET prices partly due to polyester supply /demand, continuing tight balance of feedstock drove PET trade to a standoff last December as buyers and sellers could not agree on workable prices.

High demand for polyester fibre especially in Asia, boosted by substitution for cotton has impacted supply for bottle-grade PET. Can PET traders expect improvement in the situation in next coming months as summer kicks in, in Europe ?

Is tight balance of PTA & MEG expected to remain throughout ? Can PTA capacity additions keep up with PET and polyester demand growth ?

CEE & Balkans PET conference will give you true insights into the marketdevelopments , the changing trends that will affect your business and the opportunity to meet and make deals with the right market.

Meanwhile, keep track of new developments in PET renewable feedstock as more companies look into replacing oil-based monoethylene glycol (MEG) with BioMEG using sugar-based ethanol as feedstock.

Brand owners, Coca Cola and Heinz have joined hands recently to increase usage of Bio-PET in their packaging . In line with sustainability, can the industry in time, achieve a PET packaging from 100% renewable material ?

Hear from Avantium who has developed a breakthrough technology claiming to be a green alternative to PET and can be produced cheaper than oil-based plastics. Such developments will transform how food will be packaged around the world and definitely impact PET packaging.

While feedstocks are not the only challenges faced, the increasing demand for Recycled PET (rPET) has left the European market in a scramble for more supplies . Food grade r PET surpassed virgin PET prices on tight supply for the first time.

Although post-consumer collection has improved, a lot of materials are still shipped to the Far East, with China being the biggest buyer. And as more companies invest in CSR and increased sustainability, the problem of low availability of rPET for the European market may be here to stay for a very long time.

Meet Key Top PET Market Leaders and Many More with Hours of Dedicated Networking Sessions!

Expected to attend are:

PET resin producers/ suppliers, Feedstock suppliers (PX/PTA/ MEG), polyester manufacturers, traders, converters, perform producers, designers, technology providers including machinery suppliers from blowing, perform to injection molding, robotic systems etc, recycling companies, bottlers/ fillers, brand owners…

Konferencja będzie poświęcona aktualnej sytuacji, wyzwaniom, tendencjom i prognozom dotyczącym rynku PET.

Jednocześnie cały czas rośnie popularność i wykorzystanie tzw. tworzywa R-PET, czyli PET pochodzącego z recyklingu.

UNESDA - the Union of European non-alcoholic beverage associations together with EFBW - the European Federation of Bottled

Waters, recommend their respective membership to adhere to specific design criteria for PET bottles in order to improve their recyclability.

“We are encouraging all our member companies and the wider industry to review their current and new PET bottle specifications against the EPBP Guidelines for resource-efficient PET packaging”, explains Cees Van Dongen, leading packaging issues in UNESDA.

EFBW and UNESDA hope their members will reach compliance with the EPBP guidelines by the end of 2012. Encouraging producers to meet the design for recycling guidelines is a positive step forward, not only for the future of bottle to bottle recycling, but also in terms of resource efficiency.

(Source: Drinks Media Wire, 16 Feb 2011)

With UNESDA, EFBW and other European organizations striving to improve recyclability in PET bottles design, the demand for Recycled PET (r-PET) use is anticipated to increase. Already facing a tight supply for r-pet feedstock in the EU region, how will PET producers cope with the crunch? What is the market outlook expected for the European r-PET market, as well as in the region?

These plus other concerns on the r-PET & Bio-PET markets, as well as direction of sustainability trends will be what leading brand owners, converters, technology providers & preform producers will address at the 12th CEEPET & Balkans Markets conference on 30-31 May 2011 in Krakow, Poland. Check full program details here.

Last month, Societe de Vin Internationale LTEE debut what it claims is the “first 1-L PET wine bottle for the North American airline industry” on board Air Transat flights. At just 54-g, the PET stock bottle is one-eighth the weight of the previous 430-g glass container. Air Transat, one of Canada’s largest charter airlines, adopted the use of the lightweight 1-L PET wine bottle due to its sustainability advantages in reducing weight on the aircraft and consequently reduce fuel costs.

Developed by Amcor Rigid Plastics, the 1-L bottle is also a first in this format for the company which previously produced smaller 187-ml and 750-ml PET containers. The container makes uses of the silicon oxide (SiOx) barrier coating technology developed by Germany’s KHS Plasmax GmbH.

The KHS Plasmax® silicon oxide (SiOx) barrier, which seals the container from the inside to protect the contents from oxidation, is an FDA-compliant enhanced passive barrier for oxygen-sensitive products. This ultra-thin (less than 100-nm) material is transparent and resists cracking, abrasion, and delamination. Moreover, it doesn’t degrade over time nor limit the storage time for empty bottles. The barrier coating is easily removed during the recycling process and does not contaminate the recycling stream.

As quoted by Amcor sales manager Kerry Drewry, “This is an important development because it expands the market potential for barrier PET wine containers. We expect continued growth for barrier PET bottles in a range of sizes for wine.”

Much more about this innovation in PET bottle packaging trends will be revealed at 12th CEEPET & Balkans Markets when Mr. Andreas Klages, International Sales executive with KHS Plasmax GmbH present his topic on`Silicon Oxide Barrier Coating technology for Oxygen-Sensitive Products in PET’.
