Rising Sugar Supplies - Impact on Pricing, Trade, Ethanol Feedstocks & Economics
Market attention is increasingly focusing on prospects for the upcoming 2011/12 season.
ISO's tentative projections indicate that the upcoming crop cycle may bring a significantly higher surplus exceeding three-million tons, putting further pressure on world market prices.
The surplus is very much attributed to a record harvest in Thailand, reappearance of India as an exporter and the bulk production from the new season's crop in Brazil.
Although India' announced that it would double exports this year to 1 million tonnes Reuters recently reported that global sugar markets may have to wait until November to see if they will get any further supplies from India, as its government waits to check next season's output before allowing more exports.
In Brazil, the early expectations for a large crop of 35m tonnes of sugar or more could be scaled back as recent reports indicate a drop in production output.
Can world sugar production return to surplus ? what is the size of the surplus and in which countries is production expected to grow significantly ?
With the cloud looming over Brazil production - How far will Brazil's cane and sugar output in 2011-2012 drop below initial expectations ? How much of the sugarcane will be diverted to ethanol production ?
What are the investment plans driven by the region's governments to spearhead ethanol growth ?
All these questions and more will be answered at the 8th SugarWorld & Ethanol Feedstocks conference.
Will the fall in sugar prices, would this mean that alternative feedstocks that are being explored now will be less competitive and projects will be abandoned ?
Cultivation of cassava & sweet sorghum for ethanol production have a high potential in the region. However, high production costs currently hamper a noticeable market expansion. What are the economic viability of these alternative feedstocks ?
With recent breakthroughs in enzymes development, cellulosic ethanol production is expected to become more affordable and increasingly important. Feedstocks like bagasse, straw, palm oil waste are currently being explored and will be discussed at this event.

"Bioplastics is a global trend. Thailand has more potential thanks to agricultural raw materials like sugar and cassava.
We are the second-largest sugar exporter and the largest tapioca exporter in the world So, the production of bioplastics will not affect sugar and tapioca production for food. That's why we dare to set a target to become the global leader in this industry," he said.

Amid the rising demand of sugar at the local market, but slowing production of the local sugarcane processing plants that has led to the growing import, the Indonesian government has targeted to achieve a self-sufficiency of sugar by the year 2014.
“We can still achieve the sugar self-sufficiency by the year 2014. We need in total investments of about Rp 25 trillion to develop an additional 350,000 hectares of sugarcane plantations and more sugarcane processing plants to produce around 2.5 million tons of sugar,” said Agriculture Minister Suswono in Jakarta recently.

More on Indonesia, and in particular on an insider’s perspective on sugar distribution and trade channels in Indonesia and the movement towards sugar self sufficiency will be revealed via a country-focused session ‘Indonesia - Sugar Supply /Demand Outlook’ by Didiek Goenadi, Commissioner of PT Rajawali Nusantara Indonesia.
Besides above topic, other vital updates from major producing countries and their influence on markets and prices are also expected at 8th Sugar World & Ethanol Feedstocks, to take place on 26-27 Sep, 2011 in Bangkok, Thailand!

Ethanol consumption is expected to rise by 46% this year to 2 million litres per day, driven by new eco-car sales, according to the Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency.
Director-general Krairit Nilkuha said the increase in ethanol use could reduce petrol consumption by 10% or about 20-21 million litres per day.
"Many car assemblers in Thailand will start production of flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs) with smaller engines within this year and this will offer good potential for renewable energy development," said Mr Krairit.
Thailand to date has produced 700,000 units of E20-fuelled cars and 4,373 FFVs. Honda and General Motors plan to produce FFVs this year with Toyota next year.
The use of E20, a blend of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol, has doubled to 600,000 litres per day this month from December last year, while E85 gasohol, a blend of 85% crop-derived ethanol and 15% petrol, has risen to 17,500 litres a day from 11,000 in the same period.

Brazil’s sugar and ethanol industry needs $80 billion of new investment in the next 10 years to meet global demand,
according to industry association Unica.
About 250 new plants are needed to process the country’s sugar cane, and “only” five are starting this year,
Geraldine Kutas, a senior adviser at Unica, said in an interview at a conference in Brussels. New investment
has been limited because of reduced profits in biofuels, she said.
“We will have a deficit of 400 million tons of sugar cane by 2020 if the current pace of investment
remains unchanged,” Kutas said. Brazil is the world’s largest producer of sugar.

Brazil, the world’s largest sugar producer will have a significant impact on global sugar trends. In fact, Brazil’s main producing region will have declining cane output for the first time in 10 years, industry researcher Datagro Ltd said. Cane output is expected to drop 4 percent to 536 million metric tons from a year ago, it estimated.
In addition to a reduced output, Brazilian cane production is also allocated to manufacture ethanol biofuel, depending on relative demand and prices.
At 8th Sugar World & Ethanol Feedstocks in Bangkok (26-27 Sept 2011), we look at developments within Brazil, one of the key drivers of global sugar supply and deficit for 2010/2011, and how global ethanol demand will affect Brazilian sugar production for the upcoming year.
We have invited Datagro Consulting, to share perspectives on the topic Forecast for the harvest: Brazil’s sugar and ethanol equation. Guilherme Nastari, Director of Operations, will discuss the development of Brazil’s sugarcane crop.

Thailand expects to export a record 7 million tonnes of sugar in 2011 though demand from traditional buyers in the Middle East and new Russian and EU markets could help ease pressure from the global surplus.
The 2010/11 crushing season had almost ended and a total 9.62 million tonnes of sugar was likely to be produced, the highest ever, Prasert Tapaneeyangkul, secretary-general of the Office of Cane and Sugar Board (OCSB), told Reuters.
