Global capacity for biobased chemicals and materials is slated to increase to over 7 million metric tonnes in 3 years time. Lux Research says the trend for funding in bio-based materials and chemicals have moved towards late-stage funding, attracting almost $1 billion of investments. This is supported by the importance placed on bio-based materials by large MNCs across industries, shifting away from R & D towards production as the industry matures. Growth of biobased functional polymers is expected to be on an upward trend to 2020.

Shale gas boom in USA has unexpectedly created opportunities for the biobased chemicals industry, with shortage of conventional feedstocks as output of C3, C4, C5 and pygas co-products are reduced as ethylene producers switch to lighter natural gas based feedstocks.

What is the impact of the present falling crude oil price on the biobased economy in the short to medium term? How can biobased chemical producers strategize their efforts to maintain competitiveness in current conventional feedstock price conditions?

Join the region’s leading players at Biobased World Asia in Bangkok this April when they convene to discuss the latest updates and developments in both chemicals and bioplastics, including strategies for success, access to capital, feedstock and technology.

Multiple Benefits and Networking Sessions
  • Assess the impact of the current crude oil price and shale gas abundance on biobased chemicals and bioplastics industry
  • Understand the market outlook for sebacic acid, succinic acid, isosorbide, PLA, PBS, PEF, bioplastic in Indonesia and more

Industry News

US-based specialty chemicals company - Elevance Renewable Sciences has collaborated with Genting Plantations Bhd, in Malaysia for a 240,000-tonne biorefinery factory project in POIC Lahad Datu, Sabah, Malaysia.

Genting Plantations has entered the partnership via its subsidiary Genting Integrated Biorefinery Sdn Bhd, where it will hold a 75 percent share while Elevance will hold the remaining 25 percent.

Elevance will employ its metathesis technology to produce high-performance olefins and specialty chemicals from biomass and renewable oils. The chemicals are expected to be used in multiple end-product applications such as lubricants, surfactants and detergents.

POIC Lahad Datu, that aims to spearhead the development of palm oil downstream processing and add value to its 1.4 million hectares of oil palm plantations, has over 40 investors including Genting Plantations. Genting Plantations is an integrated plantation group that owns sizable plantations in Sabah and oil palm mills.

Recently, the plantation group has partnered with Sabah-based plantation company - Hap Seng to cement for the long-term supply of raw materials, including crude palm oil and oil palm biomass.

POIC Lahad Datu is hopeful to transform Sabah into a global biorefinery hub.

The Lahad Datu biorefinery will be Elevance's third in the world, the two other being - one in Gresik, Indonesia - a JV with Singapore-based Wilmar International and another in Natchez, Mississippi - expected to commence operations in 2016.

Dr. Mel Luetkens, COO of Elevance Renewable Sciences, Inc. will speak on 'Key Factors for Successful Biorefinery Joint Ventures in Asia, From Scale Up to Commercialisation: Case Study of Elevance's Olefins Metathesis-Based Bio-Refinery in Indonesia & Malaysia' at CMT's 4th Biobased World Asia on 21-23 April, 2015 in Bangkok.

Verdezyne, Inc., has collaborated with Bio-XCell Malaysia for the construction of Verdezyne's first commercial-scale renewable chemicals manufacturing facility. The facility will be located in Bio-XCell's premier biotechnology and ecosystem park in Nusajaya, Iskandar, in southern Malaysia - which is close to Singapore.

The construction of the facility is expected to commence in 2015. The plant has an annual capacity to produce approximately 30 million pounds of diacids, including dodecanedioic acid (DDDA). It will be world's first bio-based plant for the production of DDDA. The 20,000-square-foot facility will require finances worth $75 million.

The new plant will help Verdezyne to expand further in Asia and realise its goal of replacing petroleum-derived chemicals with renewable drop-in replacements.

Verdezyne's yeast fermentation technology will be used in the manufacturing facility. The plant will use non-food, plant-based feedstock in Malaysia to produce a variety of commercial diacids, including DDDA. The diacids produced can be used for the production of nylon and other polymers for use in wide range of applications such as engineering resins, automotive parts, athletic apparel, carpeting and toothbrush bristles. The cost involved in the biobased diacids derived nylons will be lower than traditional, petroleum-derived ones.

More on bio-based projects will be discussed at CMT's 4th Biobased World Asia on 21-23 April, 2015 in Bangkok.
