"Can the Asia region including emerging Myanmar and growing demand in India mitigate effects of PET overcapacity?" "Changing landscape in Asia’s PTA supply to drive the PX-PTA-PET chain" |
It is reported that Asia Pacific demand for PET will intensify further with 47% of the world’s consumer products in PET bottles set to be sold in Asia by 2019.
Consumer brands have rushed into Myanmar since it threw open its market gates, eager to promote their products to this exciting new demographic. There has also been rise in trade with Thailand as many more products are imported into Myanmar. Thailand’s beverage company Drinkologist has a 3 year growth strategy to expand and distribute its IF Fruitamin products in the Asean Region including Laos, Myanmar and Brunei.
Loi Hein, a Yangon-based company that dominates the local purified water market with its popular Alpine brand and which is also behind Blue Mountain soft drinks, expects its annual revenue to grow more than five times over the next decade.
How does this translate to opportunities for the PET converters and packaging suppliers? What is the beverage trend and outlook for Myanmar? Foreign preform suppliers have set up facilities in Myanmar to take advantage on the potential growth market.
Indorama Ventures Packaging (Myanmar) Limited, a project for the production of preforms and closures was set up recently to serve the local beverage industry with competitive and high quality preforms.
Hon Chuan known as the “bottle cap king of Asia,” finally invested in a preform factory in Myanmar in 2013 at the Mingaladon Industrial Park, after having served Myanmar’s largest drinks maker, Pinya since way back in 2007.
Meanwhile on upstream capacities, huge expansions in China’s PTA production will intensify deficit in Asia’s PX despite PX expansions for the past two years. PX expansions from Middle East to Asia will compete to supply Europe, while on PTA, there is a risk of global supply glut.
On downstream PET markets key technology developments to 2017 also include further advances in barrier systems, continued light weighting, and growing emphasis on sustainability and recycling.
What are the latest innovations in soft drinks packaging? What is the potential of PET for pharmaceutical packaging?

Myanmar’s growing demand for bottle water has given rise to a number of unlicensed operators that produce bottle water that is of questionable standards.
According to data from the 2014 census, as much as a third of Myanmar’s towns and city dwellers drink bottled water. Mostly due to poor quality of urban water supply systems.
After a nationwide survey conducted by Ministry of Health’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA), some 750 brands of bottled water were approved while 73 (close to 10 percent) brands were found to be lacking in quality, or being unregistered with the FDA. The FDA subsequently released a list of these banned brands and their production locations. These unregistered brands cannot guarantee hygiene as they might be using tap water.
To meet the demand of the locals, many small scale purification facilities have come up in Myanmar. It is quite easy to set up such a facility and some of the them are located in residential complexes. These small-scale facilities produce almost fifty to hundred 20-litre bottles per day. It has become a mammoth task for FDA to curb the growth of these facilities. Even if the FDA bans a particular unregistered brand, they quickly change the name and come up with a different brand name.
In just one instance when the FDA, staff of Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) and the police conducted surprise checks at facilities in Yangon in February, as many as 13 failed to meet hygiene standards.
What does it mean for global bottled water brands entering the Myanmar Market? What happens to the vast number of PET bottles used by these small-scale facilities? Is there a way to integrate them to the PET value chain and raise the hygiene standard for bottled water?
6th PET Asia Outlook on 17-18 November, 2016 in Yangon discusses more about the country’s demand for bottled water.

According to Canadean, who provide research analysis of international beverage industries and beverage packaging, Asia is predicted to contribute two-thirds of global incremental beverage consumption by 2021. Out of this increase, China will be responsible for one-third of the volume.
Besides China, Canadean also highlighted India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Thailand and Vietnam as the key growing markets predicted to be the top ten increment volume providers in the period leading to 2021.
As a result of a growing global health trend, water consumption is up and bottled water, together with home/office delivery of water, will be the primary driver of incremental volume growth in these markets. The lack of good quality tap water in emerging markets is also contributing to increased consumption of packaged water.
Today, Asia’s rapidly increasing beverage consumption is a stark contrast to 2000, when the US and West Europe together accounted for nearly one-third of global commercial beverage consumption.
