3rd Global Feed Summit

29-30 Nov, 2017 - Bangkok, THAILAND

Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit

"Towards improved feed safety, industry
integration & innovations!"

Global feed production surpasses 1 billion metric tons for the first time, despite fewer feed mills around, according to the survey results published by Alltech.  USA and China are the top feed producers accounting for 35%  of total world  production.

Asia continues to grow in the foreseeable future with on-going consolidation! Last year, Vietnam recorded a spectacular growth of 21%, especially in the pig and broiler sector. Aquaculture continues to shine across regions. Besides Vietnam, where are the other investment hotspot? Which sectors shows greater potential?  What strategies to adapt moving forward?

Effective 1 July 2017, processed proteins derived from insects are authorized in feed for farmed fish in the European Union. This comes at a time when fishmeal has seen significant price increases due to supply restrictions and increased demand. This presents huge opportunity for insect protein producers to develop bigger facilities to cater to the growing demand for alternative protein.

The Asia Pacific feed market has also grown remarkably, key drivers such as sustainability, environment, AGP replacements offer opportunities. R&D and innovation, as well as business model will change moving forward.

BioMar and Tongwei Launch New Extruded Feed Line and Warehouse in Southern China

Posted on : 02 Nov, 2017

After acquiring 100% shares in fish feed company Haiwei in November 2016, BioMar Group and Tongwei Group have now started an extruded feed line and warehouse at the Haiwei plant in southern China.

The plant is located in the Pearl River Delta that has a large production of Japanese sea bass and snakehead, among other species. Haiwei has a good reputation among fish farmers and the JV will leverage on the Haiwei brand.

The new extruder line is part of an upgrade of the factory that has replaced older equipment with more efficient technology. With the plant expansion, it has now three extruded feed lines. The joint venture is expected to leverage on the know-how in high performance, environmentally-friendly diets for the species grown in the Delta area.

BioMar-Tongwei aims to serve the high performance feeds to the Chinese market – with this year’s estimates of selling around 60,000 metric tons.

BioMar fish feed is already being produced in Chengdu in South Central China and a new factory is being built in Wuxi area, nearby Shanghai, with an initial capacity of 50,000 tonnes with a possibility for expansion to 100,000 tonnes in the future.

The BioMar-Tongwei plant in Wuxi is expected to commence operations in the second half of 2017.

Vietnam’s growing feed market

Posted on : 26 Jul, 2017

Vietnam’s animal feed market is growing rapidly, with the country importing animal feed and also materials for producing animal feed worth US$1.8 billion in the first half of 2017. This is a year-on-year increase of 17.3 per cent. The country’s Department of Animal Husbandry has proposed a plan to temporarily stop building new feed mills in Vietnam and has advised the animal feed industry to promote internal resources, use feed more effectively, control diseases and reduce costs to compete with imported products.

Vietnam primarily imports animal feed and materials from Argentina – that is worth $828 million – a 21.6 per cent year-on-year surge, accounting for 46.7 per cent of its total imports.

The other countries that Vietnam imported include – Brazil – imports worth $68 million, up 5 per cent and China - $75 million, down 32 per cent.

In the first half of 2017, Vietnam also imported animal feed and materials from the US, India, Indonesia, Italy and Austria.

Investments in Vietnam’s feed industry continues from global companies – especially in its aqua feed sector. This year, aquatic feed maker Skretting opened a new shrimp feed plant in Vietnam which will serve the country's fast-growing shrimp sector. The plant is 23,000 square meters and has an initial annual production capacity of 60,000 metric tons. The facility is located in the Thuan Dao Industrial Zone, Long An, near to transport links to other important farming provinces in the Mekong Delta.

Earlier this year – Cargill opened its tenth aqua feed line at its feed mill in Ha Nam in Vietnam. It is Cargill’s second aquaculture feed line in the North of Vietnam. With a production capacity of 3,000 MT/month, the line focuses on high quality extruded feed for Tilapia and other local species to serve the local demand for floating fish feeds.

For more information on feed markets in Vietnam and Asia, attend CMT’s 3rd Global Feed Summit on 29-30 November, 2017 in Bangkok.
