"Assess Opportunities in Growing Asia"

Growth in the Asia Pacific region has significantly outpaced the other regions, and thus promising strong market growth and lead the market for adhesives and sealants.  A growing middle class in Asia-Pacific (particularly China) has generated strong demand for automotive and packaging materials thus driving the demand market for adhesives and sealants.

Rapid urbanization and population growth propels growth in infrastructure & construction activity in Asia thus also boosting growth of adhesives and sealants market.  Asia Pacific attracting investments for localized production, R&D and product development, to enable efficient and faster reaction to customer requirements, and maintain long-term competitiveness in this sector.

Stringent regulations and measures to reduce the impact of volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) and other potentially hazardous materials on the environment and health is pushing the adhesives and sealants to adapt to this requirement.  The ongoing conversion of solvent-based adhesives to water-based adhesives for certain applications is an example of this trend.  However, the higher raw material costs and doubtful product performance hinders the rate of adoption, particularly in this price elastic Asia region.  More stringent environmental regulations and improved quality and economics will need to be addressed to boost the growth of waterborne or green adhesives and sealants.

Wacker Chemie is further strengthening its position with a new technical center for construction and adhesives applications in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The center will act as a development and testing laboratory for dispersible polymer powders and dispersions – used as binders for the regional building, paint, coatings and adhesives industries.

Southeast Asia has a rapidly developing market for high-quality construction polymers and chemical raw materials fueled by its fast growing building industry. Demand for construction chemical specialties has risen noticeably over recent years, especially for Wacker’s dispersible polymer powders and dispersions. The new center will be focused on serving customers and business partners in the region.

Wacker already runs a technical center in Singapore that offers development of new products and applications for electronics, textiles, automotive, coatings, construction and health care products in Southeast Asia.

Wacker also has a sales subsidiary in Jakarta. The new technical center will be focused on formulations containing VINNAPAS® dispersible polymer powders and dispersions that are primarily used in dry-mix mortars for tile adhesives or grouts, in water-proofing membranes for bathrooms, kitchens or basements, or in eco-friendly interior wall paints.

The new lab will test products under different climatic and environmental conditions and using different raw materials. It will also have an outdoor weathering station to help analyze the weathering behavior of polymer-modified exterior coatings.

With the new center, Wacker aims to develop and test innovative polymeric binder applications tailored to modern construction trends and local raw materials.
