Growth of the South Korean biomass power in 2013 has since boosted the production of wood pellets in Vietnam and to-date, Vietnamese producers are one of the key leaders for the supply to the fast-expanding North Asia – Japan, South Korea and China.
In October 2017, it has been reported that more than 800 biomass power projects, 12.4GW capacity, have been approved in Japan. With current supply from domestic supply, Canada, Vietnam, USA & South East Asia, this sheer number of projects still sparks questions on biomass fuel availability and sustainability, from, to feed when all these capacity come on-stream.
South Korea’s wood pellet demand is also expected to increase, given the rise in new biomass-consuming facilities scheduled to come on line in the next few years. Imports could reach over 2 million tons this year as utilities continue to transition to a broader use of biomass.
Meanwhile, robust industrialization and growth in Vietnam has fueled a surging demand for electricity. Electricity consumption from industrial and residential, is expecting to grow by 8 - 12 percent annually through 2020. And to meet this demand, additional capacity of 4,000 MW per year, from now through 2020, will be required. The recent revised Power Master Plan VII (towards 2030) emphasized renewable energy capacity growth in wind, solar and biomass power, with targets to increase the percentage of renewable energy power to 7% percent by 2020 and 10 percent by 2030.

Victorias Milling Company (VMC), Philippines’ largest sugar refinery, is setting up a 64 MW biomass power plant in Victorias City, Negros Occidental. The Biomass Cogeneration Project is expected to be ready by end of 2017.
It is built in the 200-hectare VMC headquarters and is designed to produce power not only for the refinery but also for the national grid.
VMC is hopeful that it will be able to export 25 MW of its generated power to National Grid Corporation of the Philippines. However, the national power grid is congested currently and it has to be upgraded in order to receive additional power from VMC.
The biomass plant will use mainly bagasse as a feedstock. VMC has bagasse as a byproduct from its sugarcane processing plant. VMC also opened milling operations last September 20 together with the other two sugar centrals in the province. The sugar refinery is confident that their mills will be running at maximum capacity, which is 15,000 to 16,000 tons of sugar a day. This will ensure steady flow of feedstock for the biomass plant.

Thailand’s Mitr Phol Grouitr Phol Group via its subsidiary – Panel Plus Bio-Power Co. has started a rubber woodchips based power plant in Hat Yai, Songkhla province of Thailand. It will be Panel Plus Bio-Power Co.’s first biomass power plant.
The 9.9 MW power plant will turn approximately 120,000 tons of rubber woodchips per year into electricity. It has started generating electricity to Panel Plus Group since March 2017.
The new plant is in tune with Mitr Phol Group goal of expanding power business to 200 MW from non-bagasse fuel by 2020 under The Alternative Power Business Unit. The company is using a range of local agricultural waste – both from its panel board business as well as rubber woodchips available in the vicinity.
The new biomass plant in Songkhla is not only the first biomass power plant of Mitr Phol Group to use rubber woodchip feedstock, it is also the first power plant in Southern region of Thailand.
High performance of combustion system is used in the power plant – that needs fewer raw materials and consumes less energy compared to conventional boiler, especially the top loader system. The plant also uses Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) in order to reduce fly ash from boiler emission together with the first Solar Floating power plant. It generates about 20 kW of electricity.
Mitr Phol Group runs a total of 7 biomass power plants in Suphan Buri, Sing Buri, Khon Kaen, Chaiyaphum, Kalasin, Loei and Tak – and is undoubtedly Thailand’s largest biomass power producer. All the 7 facilities has a combined production capacity of 552 MW annually. All the Mitr Phol plants have agreements with EGAT and PEA to sell electricity amounting to more than 191 MW annually.
