- Challenges for the PET industry 

There is a critical shortage of PET supply in Europe , as almost all European manufacturers now report sold out capacity ! Bottlers who have not stocked up are grappling for supplies everywhere as drinks’ season starts in March. While PET producers try to fill big orders, what will happen to small mid sized converters   who have no long term contracts with their suppliers  ? Where will they find PET imports ? Can Asian  producers fill the gap ? Flow of goods have started to shift considerably in the last few months as Asian exports to Europe in large quantities regardless of high import duties.

Amidst the shortage , PET prices continue to rise, compounded even further by the increasing crude oil price .

 

Meanwhile, the European Commission continues to emphasise on sustainability and recently published the Europe Plastic Strategy which calls for all plastics packaging to be re-used, recycled and not littered by 2030.

 

The growing importance of PET’s role in the Circular Economy cannot be denied . It would need the involvement of the entire value chain from producers to endusers.

The project was conceived to recycle selectively collected PET scrap and to remake it into resin of nearly the same quality as the original (virgin) PET.  The capacity of the plant was chosen so that it could rework as much material as the output of the Aquarius group, a leading soft-drink manufacturer in Hungary.

 

The selectively collected plastic scrap is scratched, cleaned in an elaborate process in the Recy-Pet plant in Karcag, and processed into regranulate. Regranulate is intended to replace the current raw material of the bottling industry, the virgin granulate, which is largely imported from abroad to Hungary, with significant exposure to the international market and economic conditions. The soft-drink industry is currently using a mix of recycled and virgin plastic.

 

The objective is to use 100% one day, which is basically feasible and proven. The carbon footprint of recycled/virgin mix is much lower the that of the virgin PET.

Belgium based home and personal care products company – Ecover has launched a plastic bottle that is made of 100% post-consumer recycled PET to package its core washing-up liquid range.

The PET bottles will be made by using post-consumer PET sourced from Europe. The move is expected to lower carbon footprint by 70% compared to the use of virgin PET and non-recycled plastic.

The PET bottle is not only made of 100% recycled material it can be further recycled too as it is completely transparent. Ecover has also redesigned the caps that now has less plastic, with an estimated saving of 14 tonnes of polypropylene plastic annually from the manufacturing process.

Ecover designed the new sustainable PET bottle in-house in Germany and Switzerland. The bottles will be filled in Ecover’s factory in Belgium which also features natural materials such as wood (instead of steel) and eco-bricks.

The new bottle is not just environment friendly, it is also a design that is easy for users – its shape is versatile, fitting comfortably in the hand.

Ryan McSorley, designer at Ecover, added: “We have created a bottle that is more sustainable – 100% recyclable and made from 100% recycled plastic – but also visually pleasing and practical.”

The transparent bottle enables users to see the dye free formula inside and content left in the bottle. The use of PET also allows users to squeeze the bottle as people quite often want to use every last drop.

Europe’s PET bottles and containers collection and recycling has increased significantly in recent years. Countries that fared well in PET bottle collection and recycling in Europe are – France, Germany and Italy that together represent 47.9 percent of the total volume collected in the region. Spain and UK are also making significant progress and in 2016 the five countries’ combined total share of collection stood at 70.9 percent.

In 2016, the European region collected a total of 1.880.900 tons of its 3.147.000 tons of PET bottles and containers – accounting for 59.8 percent. Of this amount that were collected - 1.773.200 tons were mechanically recycled – as per conclusions from the annual PCI Wood Mackenzie PET recycle survey for West Europe in 2016, commissioned by Petcore Europe. This marks a good progress in PET collection and recycling in Europe – as collection rate increased by 7.4 percent, while the recycling rates grew by 7.3 percent compared to 2014. 

Among collected PET bottles and containers, clear bottles collections have gone up accounting for 17.3 percent of the complete stream with an increase of 2.1 percent on the 2014 share and the first increase in share in 5 years. According to Christian Crepet, Petcore Europe Executive director, “The quality of bales with additionally a total share of 26.4 percent clear/light blue bottles, 25.5 percent mixed colours including green/brown bottles, and 30.8 percent of unspecified mixed colours clearly continues to challenge the recycling industry.”

The survey also revealed that the recycled PET is mostly used in sheets – comprising 38 percent of the market, followed by blow-molding applications at 26 percent and fibers at 24 percent. The remaining around 11 percent are used for strapping and other applications.

Braskem has partnered with Haldor Topsoe to develop monoethylene glycol (MEG) from sugar. MEG is key raw material used to produce PET resins that is the main man-made raw material in the production of PET bottles and other packaging products as well as textiles.

The technological agreement between Denmark-based Haldor Topsoe and Braskem entails the construction of a demonstration plant in Denmark, starting in 2019. 

Haldor Topsoe specialises in catalysts and surface products and the project for bio based MEG production will include a two-step process developed at Topsoe’s labs along with own catalysts. It will focus on converting sugar into MEG at a single industrial unit, which will reduce initial investment in the production and boost the competitiveness of the process.

The project is expected to be major milestone in the use of renewable polymers as a carbon capture tool that can contribute to a sustainable future.

The demonstration plant is expected to perform several tests to validate the technology. The demo plant will also perform the technical and economic feasibility tests – that are crucial to determine whether the technology is ready for industrial scale and commercial operations. 

The unit will experiment the technology using a variety of raw materials such as sucrose, dextrose and second-generation sugars.
