Recycled Polyester Clothing"

"PET Food Trays, Modified PET Resins for North Asia’s Sophisticated Packaging Market"

North Asia consumers, especially the Japanese, Koreans, Taiwanese are the quickest to adopt to novel offerings. The typical consumers adapts well to convenient packages with consumer-friendly shapes and functions, ie easy-to-open packages, portable packages, and re-sealable packages.

Consumers and retailers are relentlessly demanding new products and “green” purchasing.

As a supplier of polymers, recycled or biobased plastics, are you aware of the list of substances materials that are permitted for use in packaging food ? What are the labelling guidelines to qualify as an eco-friendly pack ?

"Suntory increases its investment in bio-based plastics" ~ January 18, 2018 Plastics News

While companies like Suntory recently announced their ambitious environmental plans with Anellotech, many other innovations are coming up including lightweighting, recycled packaging materials ,innovative solutions with low environmental impact throughout the value chain.

In Japan, Synvina will boost the PEF polymerization and further develop PEF films for food packaging, in electronics and industrial applications. Additionally it will collaborate with Mitsui on developing PEF thin films and bottles in Japan.

"Japan to impose antidumping duty on PET from China for 4 months from Sep 2" ~ Singapore (Platts) --29 Aug 2017

The antidumping duty on China’s PET imports that came into effect last September caused severe shortage in Japan leaving convertors and PET sheets/ trays industry to grapple for alternative supply sources, and on the other hand an attractive opportunity for new supply volume from Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.

Can these countries meet Japan’s increasing demand as the country looks forward to hosting the Summer Olympics in 2020.

China represents the largest supplier of PET resin to Japan and before the AD duties, it was 30% cheaper than others.

In Taiwan, the plastics recycling industry is one to keep an eye on.

Plastic recycling in Taiwan is breathing new life into PET bottles waste, creating a booming new business that is also environmentally friendly. Ecomax company saw this opportunity and is the first company in Taiwan to successfully produced recycled fiber from PET bottles.

JEPLAN has an innovative chemical recycling solution that can circulate everything – from manufacturing rPET flakes, resin from collected bottles or polyester to even recycling polyester clothes back to fabric and yarn.

Japan’s Suntory Invests €9 million in Anellotech to develop 100% recyclable bottles

Posted on : 21 May, 2018

With the increasing realisation of the damaging effect of plastic on the environment, more and more brand owners are forced to look at sustainable packaging solutions. Japan’s major drinks manufacturer - Suntory Holdings continues to invest in environment friendly packaging solutions. The manufacturer of soft drinks Lucozade and Ribena and spirit Jim Beam, already has a partnership with Anellotech to produce cost-competitive renewable chemicals from non-food biomass. In a further commitment towards sustainable packaging, Suntory has confirmed to put in approximately €9 million in Anellotech to develop 100% recycled bottles.

Suntory’s Mineral Water brand – Suntory Tennensui is already packaged in 30% plant-derived materials. The development of 100% bio-based PET bottle through its partnership with Anellotech is aimed to provide more sustainable solutions.

Anellotech uses Bio-TCat Process to produce cost-competitive renewable aromatic chemicals (benzene, toluene, and xylenes, “BTX”) from non-food biomass. These are used in the production of plastics such as polyester, nylon, polycarbonate, and polystyrene, or for renewable transportation fuels.

Apart from Suntory there are several others focusing on recyclable PET packaging such as Danone’s water brand Evian has formed a partnership with a Canada’s Loop Industries to develop 100% recycled bottles by 2025. Evian has already achieved carbon neutrality in the US and Canada last year, and aims to achieve global neutrality by 2020.

Suntory is presenting a session on ‘Enhancing Our Brand & Introducing New Products in PET and Biobased Packaging’ at CMT’s 3rd North Asia PET Markets, Applications & Recycling on 7-8 June, 2018 in Yokohama, Japan.

Synvina’s PEF bottle can be recycled now

Posted on : 23 Apr, 2018

Synvina, a joint venture between BASF and Avantium, is a specialist in furandi¬carboxylic acid (FDCA) production that is made from renewable resources. FDCA is a main building block of polymer polyethyl¬enefuranoate (PEF) used in food packaging, films and plastic bottles.

Recently, European PET Bottle Platform (EPBP) has given interim approval for the recyclability of PEF, produced by Synvina. With this approval, PEF bottles can be disposed through existing recovery systems that recover and recycle PET plastic bottles. Synvina is also working with recyclers and brand owners to develop a separate recycling stream for PEF bottles only.

EPBP’s interim approval allows a PEF market penetration of up to 2% - corresponding to the amount of PEF that Synvina can produce from its intended 50,000 tons reference plant for FDCA. A final statement is expected to be made prior to the market introduction of the novel material based on PEF quality, packaging designs and regional launch markets.

Recyclability is a key aspect of packaging industry to meet the standards of the circular economy and PEF bottles have the advantage as it can be recycled and used as raw material for bottles, packaging and textiles. Given this capability PEF has an edge over bio-based plastics or barrier materials. It also has a higher mechanical strength, allowing for thinner PEF packaging.

PEF is used as a barrier layer in cups, trays, flexible packaging, bottles for CSDs, non-CSDs, water, dairy, still and sports drinks and alcoholic beverages.

The PEF recycling in the US and Japan is expected to be reviewed in the near future. Meanwhile a €25 million grant has been approved by the European Joint Undertaking on Bio-Based Industries (BBI) to ‘PEFerence’, a consortium of 11 companies, that supports the establishment of a value chain for bio-based raw materials as well as chemicals and materials based on PEF. Synvina’s 50,000 ton FDCA reference plant is one of its projects.

Learn more about ‘PEF polymerization and PEF market development for packaging industry’ from Takeshi Irie, Senior Business Manager, Japan Synvina presenting at CMT’s 3rd North Asia PET Markets, Applications & Recycling on 7-8 June, 2018 in Yokohama, Japan.

Petainer, Mitsubishi Chemical, KHS Japan to Introduce new PET kegs in Japanese Beer Market

Posted on : 16 Mar, 2018

The demand for craft beers has grown considerably across the world including Japan. Japan’s leading brands Asahi and Kirin are becoming increasingly influential in the global beer market too.

Breweries worldwide are increasingly preferring single-use PET kegs as they are not only economical and an efficient alternative to traditional steel kegs and glass bottles, but they are also recyclable, cutting down on logistics costs and washing processes. In addition the kegs provide excellent product protection.

To tap such demand, sustainable packaging company, Petainer has collaborated with KHS Japan and Mitsubishi Chemical to introduce one-way PET beer kegs in the Japanese beer market.

The partnership is expected to help develop a new 10L keg that is designed for the Japanese market and supports the legislative trends aimed at reducing packaging weight limits.

The DLC Keg will use Mitsubishi’s DLC barrier technology along with Petainer’s petainerKeg™ technology. The DLC will replace petainerKeg’s™ existing Nylon and Polyshield barrier technology plus it will be clear instead of the traditional amber. The beer kegs will be recyclable too as it won’t have Nylon and the amber colour.

Mitsubishi will assemble the petainerKeg™ range and the DLC Keg after applying DLC technology in Japan. They plan to manufacture the kegs by blowing from preforms.

The sales and distribution of DLC keg and petainerKeg™ range in Japan will be jointly owned by Mitsubishi, KHS and Petainer.

Kirin is one of the major brands that is already using Mitsubishi’s DLC technology.

More about PET kegs and PET packaging market in Japan at CMT’s 3rd North Asia PET Markets, Applications & Recycling on 7-8 June, 2018 in Yokohama, JAPAN.
