Following the latest blog update on Coca-Cola, the Technical and Logistics VP; Mr Rino Abbondi announced ambitious goals to replace existing PET bottles with that made of resin 100% derived from sugarcane by 2020. Current efforts on the “PlantBottle” uses 30% ethanol derived from sugarcane as its raw materials.
More importantly, Coca-Cola’s “PlantBottle” will not see a change in chemical makeup, color, weight or appearance of conventional PET bottles yet the new bottle remains 100% recyclable. Plus, this will reduce the company’s dependence on non-renewable resources. Another positive feature of the green bottle is that its production generates a 25% reduction in CO2 emissions when compared to producing the same number of bottles from fossil fuels.
Coca-cola expects that the production of “PlantBottle” in 2010 alone will lead to a reduction in the use of oil - of more than five thousand barrels. Further, projections to incorporate the increase from 30% - 100% as intended by Coca-Cola would mean that the amount of ethanol would rise to 227,000 litres for every 10 million bottles.
