Southeast Asia’s Growing Appetite for Protein

Posted on : 25 Aug, 2017

The global protein ingredients market is forecast to grow by more than 7% to reach US$43.3 billion by 2024. Among key growth regions is Southeast Asia. As the need to be healthier becomes more important, nutritious diets – especially protein-fortified food and beverages are becoming increasingly popular. Protein that was once viewed as a source of ‘fitness’ is now being perceived as a ‘health and wellness’ ingredient.

Some of the key markets in Southeast Asia are – Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia. For instance, Singaporeans are focused on health and fitness, which is driving the demand for protein-fortified diets in the country. Singapore’s ageing population and rise in chronic medical conditions are also likely to open the market for more protein consumption in the future. Meanwhile in other Southeast Asian countries, factors such as rise in incomes levels is a key driving force to boost demand for protein fortified food and beverages.

Another trend that is shaping the industry is ‘convenience’. Consumers are choosing more on-the-go snacks and drinks such as cookies, snack bars and ready to drink beverages, particularly sports drinks, as well as purchasing protein in powder form.

All these trends present huge opportunities for companies such as NZMP – the dairy ingredient business of Fonterra – that has protein ingredients products.

NZMP has led the way in developing dairy protein ingredients and offers the largest range of dairy protein ingredients in the industry marketed under the NZMP SureProtein™ brand. NZMP customers use protein in a wide range of food and beverage products including cheese, protein shakes and yoghurt snacks and protein is now appearing in new convenient formats such as chips, beverages and gels.

In fact NZMP’s sales for protein ingredients in Southeast Asia have more than doubled over the last two years.

NZMP also plans to capture this growing market by collaborating with regional companies to develop new protein-related products targeted at Southeast Asia.

NZMP has collaborated with other companies, and is working with the Fonterra Research and Development Centre in Palmerston North to develop new, innovative dairy products. They expect to unveil these products to the market in 2018.
