Thai Wah to acquire two tapioca plants in ASEAN

Posted on : 16 Nov, 2017

Thailand’s tapioca products manufacturer – Thai Wah is expected to acquire two production plants in Thailand and Vietnam. The two acquisitions are said to be at an investment of approximately $30 million (1 billion baht).

According to the company, the deals are anticipated to be closed by end of 2017. Cassava market is growing considerably with high demand from food sector that use the root plant as starch and other products. There is high demand for tapioca in China too that is fueling the industry.

Thai Wah caters majorly to China and Taiwan. The company has an 8.4 per cent market share in China’s tapioca starch industry and 18.6 per cent in Taiwan. The two markets consume 57 per cent of the company’s exports. Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia and USA also import Thai Wah’s cassava products.

Thai Wah also has other expansion plans in Asia. It is also building a starch noodle production plant in Cambodia that will have an annual capacity of 30,000 tonnes. In addition, it is also  establishing a vermicelli manufacturing plant with an annual capacity of 3,000 tonnes in Vietnam. Both are expected to commence operations in 2018.
