Asia is expected to see stronger demand for BPA

Posted on : 14 Feb, 2018

Demand for polycarbonates is expected to fuel the demand for BPA in Asia – which is a key raw material for PC. China’s polycarbonate (PC) capacity is swelling with the opening of Yantai Chemical’s new 70,000 tonnes/year polycarbonate (PC) plant located in Yantai, Shandong province. The plant is expected to require up to 5,000 tonnes of BPA on a monthly basis.

Demand for BPA has in turn also raised the demand for phenol – which is a feedstock in BPA production.

Strong demand has led to an increase in BPA spot prices by $100/tonne in a single week ending 15 December 2017.

It is notable that the recent spike in China spot prices was at a time when the country’s Ministry of Commerce levied anti-dumping (ADD) duties on BPA imports originating from Thailand (effective 9 November as a temporary measure). As a result Thailand’s  PTT Phenol that exports BPA to China has curtailed its cargos flows from its 150,000 tonne/year BPA plant in Map Ta Phut to China in the near term, as costs remain high.

Although the demand for BPA is expected to grow, there is no new upcoming BPA plant in Asia Pacific. The region’s existing capacities more or less will meet the demand for BPA in recent months.
