Equipped for NEW Ventures in
Myanmar's Upstream Oil, Gas & Power
Generation
CMT's 2nd MOGP Summit (Myanmar Oil, Gas & Power) was a resounding success with over 280 participants from more than 25 countries attending the event in Yangon on the 3 - 6 September 2012. Co-hosted with the Ministry of Energy, the event was packed full of discussions surrounding exploration and investment in Myanmar's upstream oil, gas and power generation sectors and what these developments mean for investors hoping to access this frontier market. 2nd MOGP Summit was supported and sponsored by industry majors Royal Dutch Shell, ConocoPhillips, JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration and Unocal.

Union Minister of Energy, His Excellency U Than Htay, took center-stage to deliver his welcome and keynote address before he officially opened the summit and discussion. Despite the announcement on the delay of international bidding round, U Than Htay reassured participants that "once we launch the bidding process we will give bidders sufficient time to formulate their applications."

With sessions in Upstream Oil/Gas, Downstream Refining, Pipelines and Power Generation, official speakers from Ministry of Energy, Myanmar Oil & Gas Enterprise (MOGE), Ministry of Electric Power and Directorate of Investment and Company Administration (DICA) presented the latest update on the regulatory policies governing investment in the country's energy sectors. Panelists from existing E&P operators (Twinza, Essar, Parami and CNOOC) assessed the opportunities and challenges in Myanmar's upstream sectors and deliberated on issues such as terms/conditions of the PSCs, transparency and aspiration for the growth of the sector. On the other hand, U Win Khaing, President of Myanmar Engineering Society, and Henry Zaw Tun, power project consultant, echoed the urgent need for government's step-up action to meet the increasing need for power and utilities, with an estimate of a US$ 2 billion investment per year in power plants is required.

Both days were filled with honest open debates over Myanmar's future and critical discussions around the investment opportunities in the oil, gas and power sector. Overall the conference was a great success. Thank you to our co-host the Ministry of Energy, to all of the Ministries who supported the event, to all of our sponsors, speakers and delegates who made this event possible. We look forward to building upon the success of this event in 2013.
