RATIONALISATION OF EUROPEAN PET INDUSTRY & THE ROAD AHEAD
Raw material expansions & increased PET inflow from Asia/ Mideast, Recycling Legislation, Sustainability continues to present challenges to the region's industry
Market rationalization in 2008/2009 eliminated a number of producers in the region resulting in reported increase in imports to Europe by 25-28% . Most of the supplies originate from Asian and Middle East countries. This year, demand is expected to be steady but supply will be tighter due to outages and lesser imports. Also the EU has opened up antidumping investigations against some major exporters to Europe.
Because of the region's dependence on imported resin, forecasting PET trade flows has become ever more complicated & challenging. Global factors including PET market trends, raw materials, polyester , film markets need to be taken into consideration in understanding the movement of resins into the market.
Virgin PET market is losing its share to recycled PET as post consumer recycling of PET containers continues to gain momentum in Europe. With increasing importance on sustainability- how is the PET industry embracing this challenge ?
CMT's 11th CEE PET Markets & the Balkans has these answers for you !
Comprising of industry experts, the conference will provide extensive updates on the entire PET value chain. Key issues to be covered include

CocaCola Firması bir ikon haline gelen şişeleme tekniği ile üretimini hızla yaygınlaştırarak küresel PET şişeleme endüstrisinde yeni bir sayfa açmıştır. Gelişen teknolojisi ile de hammaddesi bir petrol türevi olan Mono-Ethylene Glycol (MEG) kimyasalının yerini artık şeker kamışından üretilen etanol türevi olan MEG almıştır ki tereftalik asit ile de karıştırılarak bu yeni inovatif olan PET plastiği üretilmiştir. Geçen Kasım ayında, Coca Cola şişeleme üretimi endüstrisindeki bu devrimsel buluşu üzerine Birleşmiş Milletler İklim Değişikliği (COP15) konferansları serisinin on beşincisi düzenlenen Kopenhang'da büyük reklam kampanyaları düzenleyerek müşterilerinin ilgisini olumlu anlamda çekmeyi başarmıştır. Coke inovatif yeni şişe üretimini piyasaya sürerek, aslında bu konuda merak edilen başlıca şu soruları gündeme getirmiştir;

Following the latest blog update on Coca-Cola, the Technical and Logistics VP; Mr Rino Abbondi announced ambitious goals to replace existing PET bottles with that made of resin 100% derived from sugarcane by 2020. Current efforts on the “PlantBottle” uses 30% ethanol derived from sugarcane as its raw materials.
More importantly, Coca-Cola’s “PlantBottle” will not see a change in chemical makeup, color, weight or appearance of conventional PET bottles yet the new bottle remains 100% recyclable. Plus, this will reduce the company’s dependence on non-renewable resources. Another positive feature of the green bottle is that its production generates a 25% reduction in CO2 emissions when compared to producing the same number of bottles from fossil fuels.
Coca-cola expects that the production of “PlantBottle” in 2010 alone will lead to a reduction in the use of oil - of more than five thousand barrels. Further, projections to incorporate the increase from 30% - 100% as intended by Coca-Cola would mean that the amount of ethanol would rise to 227,000 litres for every 10 million bottles. 11th CEE PET & Balkans Markets will have a segment targeted towards ‘Biodegradeable PET & Bio Plastics’. Coca-Cola will kick off the morning discussions with the revolutionary “PlantBottle” followed by a strategic discussion on promoting the use of bioplastics packaging into the mainstream market. Led by the Chairman of European Bioplastics, Dr. Harald Kaeb will present a paper on how the PET industry can prepare for this challenge.
In all, the 11th CEE PET & Balkans Markets will commence with a global and regional overview of the PET markets for resin, fibre and film, highlight technological breakthroughs and novel innovations plus latest RPET developments. The two-day event closes with an exclusive site tour to SETA’s PET Recycling Plant; one of the biggest independent PET bottle recycling establishments in Turkey.

The 11th CEEPET conference meeting in Istanbul-Turkey on 7-8 June 2010 will see PET resins experts share their latest achievements in Barrier Resins and Glass-like resins for Novel applications.
In fact, participants at the conference can expect to hear from Italian PET Resins Specialist M&G, who is now marketing their innovative new barrier resin Polyprotect™at the beer-packaging sector. According to a recent report in European Plastics News, a brewer in Central Europe who used PoliProtect™enjoyed 36% total chain cost savings for 500ml bottles due to lower freight costs, easier warehousing of smaller plastic performs, and no breakage during bottling and shipping. A Senior Representative of M&G will also provide details on M&G’s technology breakthroughs in monolayer barrier PET resin, the O2 scavenger integrated into the resin.
11th CEEPET participants will also get to know more about NOVAPET GLASSTAR™, NovaPET’s innovative new PET resin which, according to the company’s release, offers the ‘consistency, thickness, gloss and transparency of glass, and the benefits of PET’. This innovative resin, pitched as “PET for Premium Products”, promises the appearance of glass, a consistency that allows closure crown corks, easy integration into existing packaging lines, high recyclability and more.
NovaPET’s Marco Leonardi’s session, “High Performance PET Grades for Novel Packaging Markets” will see him offer insights on NOVAPET GLASSTAR’s™ application in long shelf life Dairy Products and other premium products looking for the ‘glass appeal’ in packaging. He will also share NovaPET’s innovative resins designed to meet light weighting challenges, and high-temperature resistance for oven use (Crystalline PET).

Coca Cola opened a new chapter in the PET bottling industry with the global roll out of their iconic Plant Bottle. Last November, the company made headlines when they touted their plant bottle in Copenhagen, in line with COP 15.
A press release by the company quoted Muhtar Kent, Chairman and CEO of Coca Cola as saying, “The 'PlantBottle™' is a significant development in sustainable packaging innovation.”
According to a report in the New York Times, the Coke’s plant bottle replaces the petroleum derived chemical, Mono-Ethylene Glycol with a sugar-cane ethanol derived version. The ethanol is converted through a series of chemical processes into MEG, which is in turn mixed into terephthalic acid to manufacture this innovative new PET plastic.
A life cycle analysis of the Plant Bottle conducted by the Imperial College of London indicated that the process reduces emissions by up to 25% compared with petroleum-based PET. The Plant bottle can also be processed through existing recycling facilities without contaminating traditional PET.
A senior executive from the Coca Cola Company will be speaking on the topic, “Coca-Cola’s Plant PET Development” at the 11th CEEPET conference, which is meeting in Istanbul on 7-8 June 2010. The 11th CEEPET conference will showcase latest trends, technologies and developments that have a direct impact on the European PET markets, with insights covering:
The conference is slated to attract participation from Feedstock suppliers (PX/PTA/MEG), PET resin producers & suppliers, Polyester manufacturers, Polymer/Petrochemical traders, Converters & preform manufacturers, Technology providers, Recycling companies, Bottlers/fillers, Brand owners and more.
