Sustainable Value Addition in the Polymer Industry
GCC's polymer industry is expected to hit between 9 to 11% annual growth making it one of the fastest growing regions.(Sept 2010, Khaleej times) With diversification, there has been a myriad of investments to develop the downstream industry and polymer parks. What are the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead as the region embark on initiatives to attract companies to set up operations in the polymer parks?
According to Pira International, the MENA region's packaging market is set to hit 25.5 million tons by 2014. With the packaging sector estimated to be worth over US$2billion. What is the extent of the growth potential for BOPP, BOPET,CPP Films? Though there is an increase of healthy demand for plastic packaging in the region due to the set up of more FMCGs, some of these will be exported to fast emerging markets like Asia & North Africa. What logistics solutions are implemented to bring product to market efficiently?
Plastics converters will also need to learn how they can compete globally and how strategic alliances can be developed to help them penetrate new markets. They will also need to learn the latest plastic processing technology and polymeric aids that can help them become more efficient.
Other downstream sectors that are developing fast include: Geomembrane, Plastic Pipes , wire & cable as well as auto parts. Find out how these sectors perform at the 3rd Arabplast Summit 2011 which will gather the movers and shakers of the polymer and downstream industry.

The global polyester film industry experienced a great surge in demand this year. Thanks to major players shifting focus to other sectors, the industry is now in midst of a supply shortage. Prices for packaging have also risen correspondingly.
In India, changes in lifestyle and expanding consumer base are expected to result in up to 30% growth in polypropylene consumption rates. Although local BOPP film capacity is projected to double in the next 5 years, the worldwide plastic shortage may have a potential effect on the market’s performance.
Designed to provide a clear review on the intricate dynamics of the packaging sector and identify new business potential going forward, the 3rd Arabplast Summit agenda is filled with authoritative sessions and insights on:
Growth Potential & Market Outlook of Packaging Films in the MENA Region (BOPET, BOPP, CPP Films)
Flex Middle East FZE
Challenges in the BOPP Film Industry
Taghleef Industries LLC (HQ)
Market Overview of India’s Packaging Films Business
Polyplex Corporation Ltd

For converters to compete on the global stage, it is important to assess all areas of technology that could potentially leverage over competition. One key area for consideration is process-aid technology.
On that note, CMT is pleased to have DuPont contribute a presentation on this technology via their topic, “Polymeric Process Aids for Today PolyOlefin Industry Needs”. Specifically, the company will share on their breakthrough process aid technology, the Viton® FreeFlow™ Z Technology™.
Additionally, in line with the theme “Ensuring Sustainability in the Downstream Sector”, more similarly informative addresses by various other plastics industry leaders are expected at the 3rd Arabplast Summit in Dubai. Held in conjunction with the 10th Arabplast 2011, organized by Al Fajer Information & Services at Dubai International Convention & Exhibition Centre, the 3rd Arabplast Summit will kick off in the afternoon of 10 Jan to facilitate deleagates visiting the show.

The Gulf Cooperation Council, or GCC, accounts for just two per cent of the global plastics conversion market, but annual growth is expected to reach between 9 to 11 per cent, making it one of the fastest growing regions over the medium term.
With diversification in mind, in July 2010, the Saudi Industrial Investment Group (SIIG) and CP Chem subsidiary Arabian Chevron Phillips (ACP) announced plans to diversify into downstream products, with investments of about SR1.8 billion from each partner.

The UAE and the Gulf region are going to become one of the world's largest sources of petrochemical and plastic products as the oil-producing countries invest heavily in downstream petrochemicals. Last month Abu Dhabi-based polymer producer Borouge awarded $2.6 billion (Dh9.54 billion) worth of contracts to expand its capacity and create the world's largest petrochemical complex in Ruwais, Abu Dhabi.
The plastics industry is one of the leading manufacturing sectors in Dubai, according to the Dubai Export Development Corporation 2009 report. The report estimates that the value of annual plastic production in Dubai is Dh1.3 billion.
According to Satish Khanna, general manager of Al Fajer Information and Services there are currently around 95 manufacturers producing products such as bottles and other containers, pipes and fittings, bags, doors and windows, caps and lids, foils and utensils.
The UAE has concentrated on diversifying its economy by investing heavily in the plastics industry, according to Ulrich Reifenhaeuser, chairman of the K2010 Exhibitors Committee."The GCC is heading towards reaching a stage where there is self-sufficiency in the production of plastics for the region's domestic us."
According to Khanna, the growth of the UAE plastics industry has been fuelled by industrial modernisation initiatives by the UAE government in order to reduce its dependence on imports of plastics by enhancing local manufacturing.
