Stepan researchers have developed a mild surfactant, derived from natural feedstocks, that works effectively with various hydrotropic surfactants to improve viscosity, foaming and mildness in hair and skin care products.
Cetyl betaine is an amphoteric surfactant that is made by reacting naturally-derived alkyl dimethyl tertiary amine with sodium monochloroacetate. In general, betaines are known to possess multifunctional properties in personal care hair and skin cleansing products including: viscosity building, foam volume enhancement, foam stability, improved skin and eye mildness and skin feel.
Although mid-chain alkyl dimethyl and alkyl amidopropyl betaine surfactants are well known and extensively used in personal care products with conventional primary surfactants such as alkyl sulfates and alkyl ethoxy sulfates, they have not been found to function as efficient thickeners when combined with new generation sulfate-free surfactants. Sulfate-free personal care products have become very popular recently as evidenced by introduction of several new commercial brands, as well as new products under existing brands.
The demand for "green" solutions in the personal and home care segment is growing rapidly, as customers are increasingly concerned with the environmental and safety impact of the products they buy. The Industry must meet the demands of these green-conscious consumers.
For that reason, CMT's 11th Asia Surfactants Personal and Home Care Markets will convene in Shanghai on 22-23 September 2011 to unveil how companies can follow the principles of high sustainability and deliver naturally-sourced raw materials and ingredients.
The 1.5 day event will also explore some of the latest consumer trends impacting the industry and new breakthroughs that have been made.

China underwent significant transformation and expansion in its beauty and personal care industry over the past decade, thanks to its large population and rapid economic development. Total sales of beauty and personal care stood at US$24 billion in 2010, more than triple the size in 2000.
The fast-expanding middle class of consumers in China has had a significant impact on spending patterns in beauty and personal care, particularly in the premium segment. The internet boom in the country is also looking to reshape the distribution of beauty and personal care products, driving consumption in the untapped interior of China.
Further insights on market outlook and latest product innovation in the personal care sector in China will be shared by Mr Cao Ping, R&D Director of Jala (Group) Inc. at the 11th Asia Surfactants Personal and Home Care Markets on 22-23 Sept 2010 in Shanghai.
Additionally, in-depth details on the home care market in China can be expected as Dr Zhang Li Ping, R&D Director of Liby Group presents his views on the new trends and ideas based on consumer needs.

The oleochemical market, even glycerin, saw a significant improvement last year in terms of demand and operating rates compared with the 2009 slump.
The fatty acids sector, often seen as an indicator for the economy, saw improved worldwide demand, while fatty alcohols, which were predicted to be oversupplied because of huge Asian capacity rises in the past few years, was anything but in 2010, notes Norman Ellard, director of Singapore-based consulting and trading company Rohen. "Likely estimates of average capacity utilization would be 85% in fatty acids and closer to 90% for fatty alcohols, not including some unplanned shutdowns in the industry," says Ellard. "Market growth was healthy, driven by rapidly increasing demand in the large growing economies of China and India."
2010 saw a healthy oleochemicals market, but rising feedstock costs pose a challenge for 2011.
11th Asia Surfactants Personal and Homecare Markets (22-23 Sep 2011, Shanghai) looks set to be the highly- anticipated event of the year, as it is packed with discussions pertaining to
· Oleochemicals outlook and development,
· Prospect of renewable feedstock for surfactants,
· Global surfactant market review & trend ,
· End users’ perspectives from Thailand, China & Korea, among other critical topics

The economic recovery began in 2009, continued unabated in 2010 and shows no signs of slowing down in 2011, according to analysts. That’s good news for raw material suppliers to the global household and laundry care industry, many of which continued to post impressive gains quarter after quarter since plumbing the depths of the recession.
Perhaps no company in the industry is more optimistic about the future than BASF, which completed its €3.1 billion acquisition of Cognis in December. The move strengthened BASF’s leading position in value-added products for home care and gave it a leading position in personal care ingredients as well. BASF will announce integration plans by the end of the first quarter and complete the structural integration by the end of the year.
The 11th Asia Surfactants, Personal & Home Care Markets conference in Shanghai (22-23 Sep 2011) is shaping up as scheduled! Delegates can look forward to high quality presentations on Oleochemicals, Market outlook of LAB, Prospects of renewable feedstock for surfactants, commercialization growth of MES and a panel of major end-users to discuss their expectations from the surfactants industry.
Besides presenting an excellent platform to interact with the key decision-makers in the industry today, this conference also offers new perspectives and valuable insights on the theme“Sustainability vs Cost vs Performace – A fine balancing act.”
