Cardia Bioplastics, an Australian firm with a sole manufacturing global plant based in Jiangsu province, Nanjing, China, has announced doubling of capacity at the plant. As part of the expansion plans, Cardia will add 3 film extruders and bag making machines as well as an additional 3 production lines by the end of June 2014.
The added capacity will help Cardia cater to the demand for compostable and reduced carbon footprint packaging from global brands as well as local governments.
Cardia recently bagged the order to supply Cardia waste management bins and Cardia Biohybrid™ kitchen waste bags to individual households of Jianye District in Nanjing, as part of the expansion of the organic waste diversion program in Nanjing.
The contract is worth A$250,000 for the first quarter, and estimated to be about A$1 million a year, that represents about 5% of the households in the city with a population of 6 million.
The added production capacity will also work towards providing the bioplastics product supplies to the city.
The Melbourne-based company also confirmed plans for adding capacity of 1.5 million bags per month to each production line in the Nanjing facility.
While Jianye is the first district to begin a commercial roll-out of organic waste diversion, there are plans for other districts as well.
Cardia has confirmed that it also has a contract to supply its products to about 20% of the households in Shanghai's PuDong district, worth about A$1.2 million annually.
Plus, Cardia has also tied up with Ricoy supermarket chain in Brazil to supply its products, after several states in Brazil banned standard plastic carrier bags.
Mr. Iqbal Huq, Managing Director of Cardia Bioplastics will speak on 'China: Drivers Behind Asia's Largest Bioplastics Producer' at CMT's 8th Bioplastics Markets conference, as part of 3rd Biobased World Asia, opening on 19-22 May 2014 in Singapore.

To further enhance their green portfolio, Versalis and Elevance Renewable Sciences Inc. have joined hands to develop and scale a new metathesis technology for producing bio-chemicals from vegetable oils. The two companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in this regard.
The already developed technology by Elevance will be used by the two companies to develop and scale new catalysts. Additionally, they plan to assess the design and construction of the first world-scale ethylene metathesis-based production. The project will use the renewable oils at the Versalis Porto Marghera site in Italy, taking advantage of the existing infrastructures and production streams.
The bio-based chemicals produced will be used in manufacturing personal care products, detergents and cleaners, bio-lubricants and oilfield chemicals.
Under the agreement, Versalis will extend its skills in catalysis process development and engineering design scale-up while Elevance will bring to the table proprietary know-how regarding metathesis and associated engineering with the use of vegetable oils in producing specialty chemicals for premium applications, especially leveraging its similar projects in the US and Asia.
More on such and latest updates on bio-based chemical industry will be explored at 3rd Biobased World Asia that will be incorporating 4th BiobasedChem Asia & 8th Bioplastics Markets conference and held on 19-22 May 2014 in Singapore.
