"Surviving in Tough Times Ahead..."

“Several China-based phenol makers, including Bluestar Harbin, Sinopec Beijing Yanshan Petrochemical, Changshu Changchun Chemical, Shanghai Sinopec Mitsui Chemicals (SSMC), CEPSA Chemical (Shanghai) and Formosa Chemicals & Fibre Corp (FCFC) are running their plants at reduced rates, according to production data compiled by ICIS China”

“Outside China, phenol makers including Taiwan’s Chang Chun Plastics, Taiwan Prosperity Chemical Corp (TPCC), Mitsui Phenols Singapore and South Korea’s LG Chem have in recent months scaled back their output to counter the soft market conditions.”

The phenol/acetone market continues to see supply outstripping demand, the scenario could worsen with new capacities coming on-stream this year in SE Asia & the Middle East. What are the strategies to stay profitable?  How is the downstream market performing? Will demand picks up, offering a relief to phenol/acetone producers?

Is India the only bright spot in the region? Can the price hold steady with an influx of Chinese phenol arriving on its shore? What is the impact of the widening spread between benzene and phenol on the market?

Phenol producers in Europe are likely to cut production rates as they will be exporting less phenol/Acetone to Asia with the growing capacity in Asia. In addition, downstream derivatives including BPA, epoxy, caprolactam and phenolic resins are also threatened by cheaper products from Asia, resulting in lower phenol consumption in Europe.

CMT’s 13th Phenol/Acetone & Derivatives conference on 9-10 March 2016 in Shanghai brings together industry experts to share insights during this challenging times!

Leading polymer company Covestro is investing about EUR 20 million to expand its polycarbonate films production capacity at its Dormagen site in Germany. The new coextrusion plant will manufacture high-quality, multilayer flat films, including the associated infrastructure and logistics.

The plant is expected to commence operations in 2017.

With the rising demand for high-quality flat films, the new investment can help Covestro expand its films business.

The high-quality, multilayer flat films are used in security cards, automotive interiors, medical devices and displays.

Covestro’s  product portfolio includes polycarbonate and thermoplastic elastomer films for a wide variety of applications as well as a range of high-quality specialty films.

The company has three competence centers in Germany – Dormagen, Leverkusen and Bomlitz.

‘Development in Polycarbonate Market’ will be discussed at CMT’s 13th Phenol/Acetone & Derivatives Markets Summit on 9-10 March, 2016, in Shanghai by Jens Kaatze, Senior Vice President Global Product Management, Polycarbonate Business Unit, Covestro (Shanghai) Management Company.

Specialty Chemicals leader, Hexion Inc. has announced plan to expand its water-borne epoxy resin production capacity in Tianjin.

The plant will use a new reactor to produce water-borne epoxy products that are mainly used in waterborne coatings, polymer flooring as well as carbon fibers used in wind energy, automotive and aerospace applications.

Water-borne epoxy resins are a sustainable alternative to solvent-based coatings as they reduce volatile organic compounds significantly. The demand for water-borne epoxy coatings is growing and the new expansion in China will enable Hexion to meet new demand.

Hexion is a market leader in sustainable epoxy coatings and it is one of the first global suppliers to bring the high-end epoxy water-borne technology to the region.

The new investment will enable its customers to meet the stringent environmental standards and adopt sustainable paints and protective coatings.

Hexion also expects that the expansion will help them produce locally; thus shortening supply times for its epoxy resins, curing agents and modifiers, including its latest development, a water-borne, 2K zinc-rich resin system.

More on epoxy resins will be discussed at 13th Phenol/Acetone & Derivatives Markets on 9-10 March, 2016, in Shanghai.

INEOS has acquired the aromatics business from Axiall Corporation – which is a leading integrated North American chlorvinyl and aromatics manufacturer.

The deal is worth USD62.9 million and will benefit INEOS a major phenol and acetone producer.

The acquisition includes Pasadena, Texas based cumene plant that produces 900,000 tonnes of the product as well as transfer of another phenol, acetone and alpha-Methylstyrene business to the INEOS Phenol facility at Mobile, Alabama.

Cumene is a key feedstock in the production of phenol and acetone. Phenol and acetone are used in the production of polycarbonate, plastics, phenolic resins, synthetic fibres (such as nylon) and solvents used across automotive, construction, electronics, and fibre industries.

More trends from the industry will be discussed at 13th Phenol/Acetone & Derivatives Markets on 9-10 March, 2016, in Shanghai.
