Rising PET Prices, Insufficient RPET Material to Meet Sustainability Goals, Disruptions in the global PET industry - How is the LATAM/Mexico PET Packaging Markets coping?

Global PET prices are moving in an upward direction. With the insolvency of Mossi & Ghisolfi (M&G) plants and shutting down of JBT Industries plants in Belgium, global PET prices are expected to continue rising for remainder of the year. High demand in Europe and lower capacity in Asia are also driving the latest PET prices uptrend.

Even as Latin America's PET sector copes with impact of M&G plant closures and the subsequent acquisitions that have reduced supplies in the entire American continent, demand for PET resins is expected to remain strong.

PET - the Preferred Material for Packaging

Today’s consumer F&B as well as personal care products in sustainable packaging reduces greenhouse gases (GHG) and carbon footprint as well as offer LCA [life cycle assessment] and needless to say enable recyclability. Recyclability of PET makes it a preferred packaging material as it makes PET sustainable - enabled by a vast infrastructure of plants around the world that convert post-consumer PET thermoforms into usable flakes. Already there is a shift in thermoformed material handling trays as well as other consumer packaging from PP/PS to PET in Mexico.

Sustainability Drives PET Packaging and the Larger Circular Economy Goals

Sustainability continues to drive the plastic packaging industry with RPET key to achieving the circular economy efforts. Mexico is now the leading country in the Latin America region in PET collection and recycling - with 56.3% of PET containers in the country being recovered and recycled. Being a major consumer of bottled water and carbonated beverages, Mexico generates high amounts of PET container waste. Recycling these post-consumer PET containers can help Mexico close the circular economy loop.

Despite high recycling rates, Mexico faces a shortage in rPET flakes. Brand owners and convertors in Mexico need rPET to keep production running. The emergence of PET collection and recycling facilities in South Central America/ Ecuador may provide Mexico with imports of high quality flakes. Will that be enough to fill the supply gap? What are other possible ways - converting PET Flakes to Preforms like NGR’s solution…

Latest as of mid July
Mexico’s export of waste to China is way down, leaving more material available for domestic collectors/recyclers. The system is very flexible going from a rate of 50% to 70% in just a few months if the price is attractive enough. Find out more from ECOCE Vice President at LAPET.

Industry News

The PET and PTA market in the Americas is experiencing tight supplies since last year when M&G shut its plants and declared bankruptcy. It has resulted in reduced supply of PTA and PET in the Americas.

This year, fire broke out at Alpek's (Petrotemex) 1m tonne/year PTA plant in Altamira, Mexico that is further expected to disrupt the already-tight downstream PET markets in the region. The fire affected both the units that produce 500,000 tonnes/year each.

Although the exact impact of the fire on the PTA production is not known, the industry expects some impact on the downstream, especially when PTA is in short supply already.

The Alpek plant supplies PET resins to M&G plant, DAK Americas' Pearl River site in Mississippi and various other plants in Mexico and South America. It also exports to European polyester producers.

With the takeover of M&G assets, production is slowly resuming - Far Eastern New Century (FENC) has re-started the Apple Grove resin plant in West Virginia while Indorama is taking over plants in Brazil. Despite these resumption, there is still uncertainty in the region’s PET and PTA supplies.

More about PET and PTA market disruptions will be discussed at CMT’s 16th LAPET (Latin America PET Packaging, Applications & Recycling) Summit on 15-16 October, 2018 in Mexico City.

Mexico is now the leading country in Latin America in PET collection and recycling with 56.3 percent of PET containers in the country being recovered and recycled.

Much of this achievement is because of PetStar that has enabled Mexico to recycle its PET waste in the past decade. In fact the company has increased PET bottle recycling volume by 150 percent in five years.

Based in Mexico City, PetStar now has an annual production of 50,000 metric tons (110 million pounds) of recycled-content resin (rPET), according to a recent media report. The report further mentions that, this year, PetStar is likely to produce 30,000 metric tons of additional resin compared to 2013, which represents a huge 150 percent increase.

Already the PET recycler recycles almost 70 percent of the PET bottles annually brought to market by its shareholder beverage and bottling companies: Arca Continental, Coca-Cola de Mexico, Bepensa Bebidas, Corporacion del Fuerte, Corporacion Rica, Grupo Bottler Nayar and Embotelladora de Colima.

These statistics clearly indicates that PetStar is working towards achieving its goal of recovering and recycling all PET bottles in Mexico by 2020 and therefore achieve zero waste.

Mexico is one of the major consumers of bottled water and carbonated beverages in the world, that generates high amounts of PET container waste. Recycling these post-consumer PET containers can help Mexico close the circular economy loop.

More about rPET market in Mexico will be discussed at 16th LAPET Latin America PET Packaging, Applications & Recycling Summit on 15-16 October, 2018 in Mexico City.

PetStar keeps Mexico's PET bottles in the recycling loop

Mexico's largest PET recycling plant sets ambitious 2020 goal

03 Sep, 2018

Food and beverages major Unilever along with  chemicals company Ioniqa and resin producer Indorama Ventures (IVL) are coming together to develop a solution for PET recycling that is completely circular in nature.

The solution aims to develop a food packaging system that converts PET waste into virgin grade PET material. The solution breaks down non-recycled PET waste such as colored PET bottles into base molecule level by separating the color and other contaminants. The result is a PET material that is comparable to virgin grade PET.

The solution is not yet industrialised but if it can be implemented on a large scale, it can be a huge milestone as all PET can be converted back into high quality, food-grade packaging!

The technology is now being implemented at a 10,000-tonne capacity plant in the Netherlands. Soon afterwards, Ionica will supply to Indorama, that will convert this Ioniqa product into PET resin to be used in Unilever’s packaging.

Unilever expects to have this circular PET ready for use by the third quarter of 2019 – very much in line with its commitment that all of its plastics packaging will become reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.

Will Latin American companies adopt such advanced PET recycling solutions? For more information on latest PET packaging and recycling technologies attend 16th LAPET Latin America PET Packaging, Applications & Recycling Summit on 15-16 October, 2018 in Mexico City.
