Dr. Penny Patton

Penelope Patton is a Senior Research Fellow in Innovation and Commercial Development with Tate & Lyle, located in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, USA.  She has worked in product development for Tate & Lyle, formally A.E. Staley, for 30 years, in the areas of starch chemical and physical modification, characterizations, fermentation, purification, and process optimization, resulting in 14 patents and patent applications.  She has developed carbohydrate-based products for use in foods and beverages, pharmaceuticals, adhesives, coatings, industrial thickeners and binders, and most recently was a key contributor to the development of CLARIA® clean-label functional food starches.


Penelope has a PhD in Polymer Science and Engineering from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, with specialization in polymer physical chemistry.

Dr. Hans Theodor Regier graduated from Universidad Nacional de Asunción, Paraguay and his area of academic specialization was in Administration in the IAE Business School in Buenos Aires. He lead from 2008 the Codipsa Company with four plants. Codipsa is the biggest tapioca starch exporter in South América.

Mr. Borba works at Haver & Boecker for 13 years and has 8 years’ experience in packing, palletizing and automatic loading solutions in agroindustry markets such as South America and Europe, he also has a strong know how in process optimization and operational costs reduction. Dr. Thierry Tran

Dr. Thierry Tran is a Researcher in Food Technology with CIRAD (International Center for Agricultural Research and Development, France), and is currently based at CIAT (Centro Internacional para la Agricultura Tropical) in Cali (Colombia). He has 12 years of experience in Cassava processing technologies and in Quality of cassava-based products, including improving energy and water efficiency, process yield, utilization of by-products, and environmental impact assessments. During that time he has worked for 8 years at Kasetsart University (Bangkok, Thailand), contributing to research on large-scale cassava starch production. Since 2016 he leads the research activities on post-harvest quality, preservation and processing within the Cassava Program at CIAT. Dr. Thierry Tran completed a PhD in Food Science and Technology from the University of Nottingham (UK) in 2003.

Dr. Sidney Netto Parentoni

Graduated in Agronomy (Federal University of Viçosa-1983), Master in Plant Breeding and Genetics (University of Minnesota-USA-1993), Ph.D in Plant Breeding and Genetics (ESALQ/USP 2007). Researcher in Plant Breeding and Genetics at Brazilian Agriculture Research Corporation (Embrapa) since 1989. Major research areas are: maize breeding and genetics, with emphasis on nutritional efficiency (phosphorus and nitrogen), abiotic stresses (drought, aluminum tolerance and acid soils). I have been responsible for the release of a number of maize hybrids and open pollinated varieties at Embrapa. Author/coauthor of more than a 100 scientific and technical papers. Head of Research and Development at Embrapa Maize and Sorghum from 2011 until present.
