It will produce biobased specialty chemicals such as 9-decenoic acid and esters, C18 dicarboxylic acids and esters, etc using natural oils and waste oils as feedstocks.” “Glycos Biotechnologies is teaming up with Malaysian biotech hub BioXCell to build a 20,000 tonne/year biorefinery in Nusajaya, Iskandar, Malaysia which can convert glycerin, free fatty acids or palm fatty acid distillate to technical grade ethanol, isoprene and acetone. The plant can be expanded to 40,000 tonnes/year is expected to complete in early 2012.” The biobased chemical industry is most certainly shaping up, with several start-ups achieving important milestones for commercialization, and charging ahead despite challenges in technological acceptance, integration including funding. The World Economic Forum predicts that by 2020, the biorefining sector can contribute USD230bn into the global economy, and biobased chemicals can increase their share of overall chemicals production to 9%. In light to above development, CMT is happy to announce our very first Biobased Chem Asia – Next Generation Biobased Building Blocks conference, to be held on 14th – 15th April 2011 in Shanghai, China. Together with the support of our panel of key industry experts, this inaugural meet aims to discuss and explore the different avenues and faucets of building a biobased economy, with an agenda covering:
