Vietnam's electricity demand is expected to rise by 14% a year during the 2011-15 period and by 11% a year during the 2016-20 period, says the Asian Development Bank.
With an annual output of 100 billion kWh, Vietnam plans to increase the total power output to 330 billion kWh in 2020 and 695-834 billion kWh in 2030. To match increasing energy consumption, Vietnamese government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Malaysia's Toyo Ink Group to build the Song Hau-2 coal-fired power plant in southern Vietnam. The first phase of the project will supply 1000 MW coal-fired unit in 2021 while the second1000MW unit is scheduled to be brought into operation in 2022. Coal-fired electricity capacity is expected to raise more than five times from 5800 megawatts in 2011 to 36,000 megawatts in 2020.
