The demand for cement in the Middle East is driven by infrastructure spending and domestic supply shortage. Below are just some of the facts:

  • Saudi Arabia, earlier this year ordered to import 10 million tonnes of cement to end the cement shortage. A grant of US$800 million has been sanctioned towards building three to four cement plants.
  • It is estimated that Iraq's cement consumption is currently around 18 million tonnes; more than the 12 million tonnes were produced in 2012.
  • New infrastructure contracts including highways and power plant projects are all set to raise the cement demand in Turkey. The country's exports (currently 20% of total production) are expected to fall as a result of expanding cement facilities of the importing countries
