A new market report states Brazil produces most of its surfactants locally but the country is increasingly importing from Asia, Europe, and the United States, while Argentina imports its nonionic surfactants from Brazil and Mexico, due to the lack of domestic production of alcohol ethoxylate.
According to Colin A. Houston & Associates, the higher alcohols market has expanded rapidly at a rate of more than 4.5%/year since 2005 as new supply has come on-stream. It is also said that Asia has witnessed strong demand growth for alcohol-based products over the past few years. The demand is generated by additional requirements of liquid laundry detergent products as well personal care products. Surplus alcohols are exported to Western markets. However, trade barriers, duties and new technology could disrupt this trend.
