Myanmar aims to achieve 100 percent electrification by 2030, with 20 percent of energy from renewable sources.
With 70 percent of households lacking access to electricity, the task of 100 percent electrification is a mammoth one. How is the new government chalking out plans to achieve it?
Some foreign companies have already invested in power starved Myanmar such as the 230MW plant to be constructed by Singapore’s Sembcorp Industries. Moving forward the AIIB will lend USD20mn to the Myingyan gas-fired power plant, which will also receive USD58mn from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and potentially USD42.2mn from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Which are the other companies eyeing projects in the country?
Apart from coal fired power stations, Myanmar is also said to be looking at hydro and solar with a Thai firm recently signing 300MW solar deal in the country. Myanmar is also betting on hydro to produce electricity.
