Wood pellet producers often face challenges in complying with wood pellet specifications as well as getting a sustainability certification.

Wood pellets specifications differ across regions. The Wood Pellet Association of Canada (WPAC) manages the ENplus and CANplus pellet quality certification programs. ENplus certification now accounts for about 80% of pellets sold in the European heating sector. The European Pellet Council (EPC) governs the ENplus program and issues licenses to national pellet associations that manage the program in their own countries. A European standard for wood fuel pellets was introduced in 2011 EN 14961-2.  With certifications becoming increasingly important, producers face challenges of catering to different specifications in European and Asian markets.

Sustainability in biomass power market is another major concern and the SBP certification system aims to ensure that producers and users source raw materials responsibly and in compliance with regulatory norms, including sustainability requirements applicable. This year SBP has for the first time notched up 100 valid certificates covering bioenergy businesses operating in the large scale heating and power sector.
