China is a market leader in the production and consumption of cathode materials which are an essential material for lithium-ion batteries used in EVs. The market of cathode materials is projected to more than quadruple from 210,000 tons in 2016 to 860,000 tons in 2020.

Latest investments in China’s cathode materials saw POSCO has forming a JV with China’s Huayou Cobalt, a cathode material and precursor manufacturing corporation, to start production of cathode materials and precursors in the country. Meanwhile Beijing Easpring Material Technology – the largest Chinese enterprise with the Nickel-Rich Layered Cathode Materials – NCM622 capacity of 2,800 tons – is expected to put its Jiangsu project phase II (NCM622 capacity: 4,000 tons) into production soon.
