Italian bioplastics manufacturer – Novamont has revamped its Mater–Biopolymer plant, located in Patrica, Italy.
The revamp involved €70 million in investment that will rise to €100 million in the next three years. The new facility will increase the production of biodegradable biopolyester ORIGO-BI® - with a production capacity of 100,000 metric tonnes per year.
Novamont converted a former PET production plant into the new Mater-Biopolymer facility that will produce biopolyesters based on renewable raw materials, using a more sustainable and low-emission process.
The plant is equipped with a complex system of utilities to minimize costs and waste through the recovery and enhancement of waste.
Demand for bioplastics is increasing and this year Novamont has signed a contract with the UK's Co-op retailer to supply bio-based and compostable carrier bags at its stores.
The increased production at the Patrica site will help supply compostable plastic bags to retailers throughout Europe.
