Coal Phase-Out & Opportunities for Bioenergy in Asia Pacific

Across Asia-Pacific, countries plan to retire coal plants by the early 2030s & 2040s, creating an urgent need for reliable alternatives. Bioenergy—using wood pellets, farm residues & energy crops—can step in by tapping existing supply chains & boilers

Vietnam, for example, aims for 10% bioenergy in its power mix by 2030, offering fixed payments of around $0.08/kWh to encourage investment. Meanwhile, in Japan & Australia, blending up to 20% biomass with coal has already cut emissions by as much as 25% without major equipment upgrades. In heavy industries like cement & steel, biomass can replace coal for process heat, reducing both carbon output & air pollution.

Public and private partners share costs & risks to keep projects viable, while converting waste into fuel bolsters rural incomes & creates jobs. Together, these measures chart a clear path to phase out coal & lower emissions across the region.
