Myanmar will soon be pumping approximately $45 million worth of oil and gas a day to China by a pipeline through the Bay of Bengal. This will help China to completely bypass the Malacca Straits and Singapore. It will also mostly bypass Myanmar.
Myanmar as a country is rich in natural resources. The trick, however, is using the resources in way so as to switch from being a seller to being a consumer.
Several multinational companies are trying to drill for gas and oil off Myanmar and for this they will have to negotiate with the nation as a customer rather than a partner. Myanmar’s existing customers, on the other hand, namely, China and Thailand, are already re-working on their old purchase agreements.
Pailin Chuchottaworn, CEO of Thai Oil Company, in an article in EIN News clarified the reason behind this, “The problem is not the gas, it’s the overall capacity”.
A report, prepared for the forum by Accenture and the Asian Development Bank, states that a new offshore gas field near Myanmar's maritime border with Bangladesh will boost the country’s oil and gas output by 75 percent. The gas will be sent to China and will annually earn Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE) (a state state-owned entity) another $1.8 billion.
Drilling oil and gas itself does not contribute in creating local jobs. Therefore, Myanmar would need to find a way to make sure the local populations benefit from the investment.
The upcoming Myanmar Oil & Gas Summit in Yangon on September 24-26 will provide updates on Myanmar’s oil/ gas fiscal regime & developments from the current onshore & offshore blocks bidding.

Since its economic reform, the new Asian frontier Myanmar has both enjoyed and offered huge volumes of investment opportunities. The nation’s new foreign investment law has also encouraged international leaders from various industries to venture into Myanmar’s promising and prospective market.
A resource-filled country, Myanmar’s oil and gas potentials are known to industry players worldwide. Owing to the lack of technical know-how and expertise, the exploratory and technological development fields have become a huge basis for joint ventures between local and foreign companies.
As of June 12, the number of joint ventures between local and international energy players has hit 145, with more to come when the offshore blocks are put out to tender.
As one of Myanmar’s major sources of income, the oil & gas sector will continue to play an important role in the nation’s development plan. In order to boost the industry, the Ministry of Energy has also reported a focus of efforts in the exploration of onshore and offshore oil & gas fields.
An official host of the upcoming Myanmar Oil & Gas Summit in Yangon, September 24-26, the Ministry of Energy will be sharing insights on Myanmar’s oil & gas sector. More information on the Myanmar Oil & Gas Summit is available on the Event Page here.
