5th SCAPET

South/Central America, Andean and Caribbean PET Resin Trade, Applications & Recycling

06-08 Jun, 2017 - Medellín, COLOMBIA

“What’s Next for Price Sensitive and Consolidated

Regional PET Environment?”

PET sector in Colombia and the region is experiencing big changes as it moves toward a consolidated environment. The acquisition of Plastiglas operation as well as Aje PET equipment by San Miguel Industrias of Peru has strengthen the group’s position as a formidable player in rigid packaging.

On the resin front, more supply is expected to hit the market and tilt balance with the commissioning of M&G’s plant in Corpus Christi scheduled for the first half of this year. As South America is already experiencing oversupply since PQS started production in Brazil,  will the market change once Petrobras sells its PTA and PET business to the Mexican conglomerate Alpek? And with no PX/PTA capacity planned for South America, where will the feedstock supply come from – Mexico or Asia?

With so many uncertainties, there is still much potential for the Andean, Central America & Caribbean markets. Driven by the global initiative of creating a circular economy, the recycling sector is growing due to a mandatory 25% inclusion of rPET by the bottling companies. Furthermore, the post-consumer waste stream also consist of a high volume of films, sheets and thermoformed packages made of PET. And so arise the need to find a solution to recycle both bottles and thermoform together. To close the loop of sustainability, companies are designing to recycle. New trends in different market segments are compelling the value chain of the PET industry to come together and think as one entity!

So what does the future hold in bottle and packaging design? How will recycling shift in the next 2-5 years?

How will the regional markets evolve to meet demand?

CMT’s 5th edition of SCAPET will be the platform to seek your answers to these questions and more! Hailed as THE PET conference for the South/Central America, Andean and Caribbean markets, key conference highlights will include:

  • PET growth in Colombia and staying competitive in a consolidated environment
  • New Plastics Economy and what changes will it bring to packaging design
  • Current and future outlook of polyester intermediates globally
  • What’s driving the PET demand in Ecuador, Venezuela, Caribbean
  • Use of flexible packaging in the dairy sector and trends in aseptic and hot filling
  • Issues with recycling PET thermoforms and how to achieve maximum yield
  • What are the new beverage trends hitting the shelf?
  • China as a global powerhouse in the PTA and PET trade
  • Specialty PET/PEN blend and its use for heat resistance including aerosols
  • Position of rPET againt virgin PET in a price sensitive market
  • PETG and thermoforming: Innovations and applications

And many more!

Alpek to Acquire Brazil’s PET producer Petroquimica Suape for $385 million

Posted on : 02 May, 2017

Alpek – a leading petrochemical company – is all set to buy polyethylene terephthalate (PET) producer Petroquimica Suape (PQS) for $385 million.

Currently owned by Brazil's Petrobras, PQS  owns a 700,000 mt/year PTA plant as well as a 450,000 mt/year PET plant in Ipojuca, Pernambuco, Brazil. After the acquisition, Alpek will own all these assets as well as Citepe – a polyester unit.

Alpek already owns Mexico’s polypropylene producer Indelpro and DAK Americas, which produces PET in the US, Mexico, Canada and Argentina.

The deal is awaiting corporate approvals as well as approvals by the appropriate governmental authorities.

Petrobras is divesting assets – except for its core oil and gas exploration and production divisions – and this deal is part of the same divesting drive.

Alpek owns 23 factories in 6 countries and it is Latin America’s largest polyester manufacturer.

More on PET markets in Mexico, Brazil as well as the larger South/Central America, Andean and Caribbean region will be discussed at CMT’s 5th SCAPET scheduled on 7-8 June, 2017 in Medellín, Colombia.

New PET Technology Offers Extended Shelf Life for Yogurts

Posted on : 03 Apr, 2017

Natural and healthy products in a convenient and appetizing appeal are some of the key aspects consumers are looking for when purchasing food products. Packaging has a key role in ensuring that it protects food contents and keep it safe for consumers. As such PET packaging company Klöckner Pentaplast has recently expanded its Pentafood film line to include ClikPET. A newly-designed PET-based technology for yoghurt packaging, ClikPET can be used on FFS lines, seals, labels and trays.

ClikPET’s unique selling point is its ability to extend the shelf life of yoghurt products by up to ten days. This offers more flexibility to retailers. Plus, the material used in ClikPET reduces cup breakage significantly. As it uses PET technology, ClikPET products are safe and sustainable. It also reduces complexity, risk and price volatility in the supply chain.

Yogurt market is highly competitive and customer orientation is key to succeed. With full polystyrene functionality, complemented by excellent gas and water vapour barrier properties and the ability to bend and click, ClikPET’s technology is ideal for yogurt packaging.

More about PET packaging discussed at CMT’s 5th SCAPET scheduled on 6-7 June, 2017 in Medellín, Colombia.

Coca-Cola Expands into Latin American region with New Takeover

Posted on : 06 Mar, 2017

Beverages giant Coca-Cola along with its largest Latin American Bottler - Coca-Cola Femsa SAB has decided to purchase Unilever’s AdeS soy-based beverage business for about $575 million.

The new acquisition will significantly increase Coca-Cola’s footprint in South America – especially its non-soda drinks business.

AdeS has a large market share in the region that had a $284 million in sales in 2015. AdeS sells non-soda sells beverages that are a mix of fruit juice and soy across Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, Chile and Colombia.

Once the takeover is completed, AdeS will be formally added to the non-carbonated beverage platforms that Coca-Cola Femsa and Coca-Cola share in its franchise territories, the Atlanta- and Mexico City-based companies.

Unilever is shedding assets in its embattled food business that has witnessed slowed growth in recent years due to a lack of innovation and declining demand. Earlier it sold off its brands such as Slim-Fast and Ragu. Unilever gains about two-thirds of the its food revenue from mature markets such as the U.S.

More about beverages and bottling market trends in South/Central America, Andean and Caribbean at CMT’s 5th SCAPET scheduled on 7-8 June, 2017 in Medellín, Colombia.
