According to CRU Group, global stainless steel output in 2008 will rise by 8.6 percent compared with 2007. Last year, the global stainless steel industry went through a phase of significant production cuts and this had an equally significant effect on the global nickel market as it shifted from deficit to surplus. LME inventories subsequently trended higher, reaching levels last seen in January 2000.

This trend is expected to change in 2008, as stainless steel production ramps up to meet higher demand and restocking along the supply chain. Predictions also see the global nickel supply increasing, resulting in a modest statistical surplus in 2008.
