"Will the stimulus packages help to beat the downturn?"

"Banking on eco-friendliness to gain competitive advantage"

The coatings industry is experiencing longer lead time to recover as inventory builds up and consumption falls. But could there be a silver lining amid the economy tsunami? With stimulus packages being announced from China to India, the construction sector may simply resuscitate coatings demand in Asia. Furthermore, as the industry consolidates and opportunities shrink, companies are differentiating their strategy by going green!

Industry News

While the decorative coatings segment is about 75% of India’s paint industry, the industrial coatings segment has been doing well too according to a report published by Coatingsworld.com.

The report also stated that the per capita consumption of paints in India is still very low at 1.25 kg against 51.7 kg in Qatar, 38 kg in Singapore or 25.8 kg in the U.S.

In spite of economic slowdown, the Indian paint industry is growing, though at a slower rate.

The Indian paint and coatings industry is riding high on the growth in the Indian automobile industry, new construction in the housing segment and improving infrastructure throughout the country.

The decorative segment has out paced the industrial segment in growth rate but the industrial segment has the greater potential for growth, when the automobile industry business improves.

There has also been a higher growth in demand for emulsion paints for interiors vis-à-vis distempers. The emulsion paints trend extends to the exteriors market where emulsion-based coatings are now preferred against conventional cement-based coatings.

The report sums up with a statement that the players with aggressive marketing strategies and comprehensive product portfolios will grow at a faster rate. The emerging trends in technology and marketing indicate that the industry is likely to consolidate in the coming years with industry leaders improving their market share.

To find out what a key player in India’s paint sector is doing in terms of marketing strategy, come to 10th Asia Coatings Markets conference. Mr. Ramakanth Akula, Vice President of Nippon Paints India will share a Profile of the Decorative Paint Industry in India and the company’s strategies for growth.

Once every four years an F-16 from the Dutch Air Force is selected to give a solo display at air shows around the world and made-over with a unique and striking new livery to add to the impact. Not only does the design need to reflect national pride and catch the eye, but the livery needs to be as fresh at the end of its four-year life as it was at the beginning. To make sure, the Dutch Air Force turned to AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings for its products and ability to create colors and special effects that bring challenging designs to life.

The latest design is a two-color version of the Dutch national symbol, an orange lion. Working with the designer and coatings contractor, Stork Fokker Services of Hoogerheide, Netherlands, AkzoNobel recommended Alumigrip coatings developed for the general aviation sector to obtain the high reflective special effect that gives the orange lion its unique image. Alumigrip coatings were also used for the previous show model "The Sonic Boom," and proved performance on both durability and visual excitement.

The system selected was a combination of MIL specified black topcoat and Alumigrip 4250 for the two shades of orange, with a clear overcoat of Alumigrip 4300, products typically used by the general aviation sector.

"Special designs like this are always challenging to execute however the vast experience of our team not only extends the boundaries of what is possible, but also delivers incredible results that even surprise the designers when they see the finished aircraft," says Robert Rijnsburger, International Technical Sales Manager for AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings.

Paints and coatings have been getting more environmentally friendly for years. The health of a nation's construction sector broadly reflects the shape of its economy. New construction projects generate demand for a whole host of different coatings, across the board from the purely decorative to the downright functional with protective, coil, general industrial, powder and floor coatings applied en route. For years, nature itself has been the inspiration for decorative paint ideas, but now it is the very reason for them.

The concept of reduced impact upon the environment represents a new wave of eco-consciousness for the paint industry and its consumers, supplanting the low and zero- VOC (volatile organic compound) paint formulations from the limelight, as these are becoming better established.

Mirroring the higher profile of environmental concerns, the idea of natural, renewable or sustainable raw materials for the coatings industry has become a new mainstream objective, allowing paintmakers to take another step up in terms of their formulation practices. Multinational chemical companies are ideally placed to establish research into renewable raw materials.

Such measures and motives show that the paint industry is digging deeply to face up to the challenges posed by the construction sector - reduced maintenance, higher performance and increasingly sensitive to the needs of a changing world.

BASF is supplying Tata Motors with products and engineering solutions for its new Nano automobile that reduce emissions, enhance fuel efficiency and improve the car’s overall aesthetic look.

Adding color to the Nano

BASF’s most noticeable contribution to the Nano will be the color and luster of the vehicle’s exterior. BASF has been supplying automotive coatings to Tata Motors since 1998 for the company’s Indica, Sumo, Safari, Indigo and other commercial models. Now, BASF Coatings has been approved by Tata Motors to supply some colors for the Nano as well.

“Innovative products, service and efficient processes are particularly important to supply a project like the Nano,” says Hermann Althoff, Group Vice President and head of BASF’s Automotive Industry Coordination Group in Asia Pacific. “BASF is well-positioned as a global system supplier of such programs. We have successfully developed plastics, catalysts and coatings solutions for manufacturers of innovative car concepts in Europe, North America and Asia. In doing so, our goal is not to just supply the cheapest product. Instead, we work with customers to develop the most efficient, overall solution in terms of cost and performance.”
