How are the Olefins & Polyolefins Markets Shaping Up?
"Asian olefins spot prices may hit fresh highs in the coming weeks as supply is expected to tighten when the cracker turnaround season in the region kicks off later this month" [10 February 2011, source: ICIS]
With some of the crackers already shut for maintenance and disruption of many Japanese petrochemical plants due to the recent Japan's disaster, the olefins industry is seen to spiral into severe tight supply in the short term. Is this where the excess capacity in the Middle East comes in to alleviate the situation? 2 years back, a huge influx of ethylene and its derivative capacities from the Middle East were expected to go into Asia. However, this was impeded by delayed projects start-up and technical glitches.
This year, the industry might experience the full impact of the massive amount of new steam cracker capacity that has come on-stream in the Middle East. The booming China market with its successful economic stimulus package has been on the receiving end of this surplus, but will she continue to do so with new capacity additions from state-oil petrochemical giant Sinopec in Tianjin and Zhenhai? China's abundance reserves in coal have led to a leap in coal-to-olefins technology. What are the latest developments, government restrictions and regulations with respect to this growing industry?
Packaging industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in Vietnam at present. There is a rapid increase in the usage of household products. How is this industry driving the polyolefins demand and what are the latest consumer trends in Vietnam?
CMT's 12th Asia Olefins &Polyolefins Markets brings together global and regional leaders to address all these issues, to share their experiences and to map out their visions for the future.

Appetite for naphtha in Asia is falling in line with a slump in Chinese plastics consumption in 2011, on measures takenby the Centre to slow runaway economic expansion. As per Reuters, oil investors are watching Chinese demand growthclosely for any signs of a sharp slowdown, as consumption in the world’s second-largest economy has driven global fueldemand growth for the best part of a decade.
“We are now at the tipping point where the liquidity-fuelled boom which we had in the last two years is coming to an end,” said Paul Hodges, chairman of chemicals consulting firm International eChem.
China’s imports of polyethylene fell 16% from a year earlier in Q1-11 to 1.18 mln tons data from the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation (CPCIF) showed. Implied consumption of polyethylene fell 1.5% in the same months against a 7-10% expansion in the last two years, while naphtha imports fell 4% in the first four months of the year. The slide in plastics consumption comes as petrochemical supplies to China surge from the Middle East, eating into a market that typically belonged to North Asian producers.

The 12th Asia Olefins & Polyolefins Markets conference will meet on 21-22 Jun 2011 in Shanghai to examine how the Olefins & Polyolefins Markets are Shaping Up.
Given the market situation in China, the conference has invited Mr Vautrain from Purvin & Gertz to explore the price trends of naphtha and other feedstocks with the fall in naphtha demand in Asia. Also contributing is Mr Weiquan Guo from China Petrochemical Corporation as he addresses China’s ethylene & propylene markets and their derivatives, providing updates on polyolefins capacities and impact on demand/supply balance. In addition, Mr Nicholas Zhu of ANZ Banking Group Limited will share on the economic outlook and projections in Asia, with emphasis on credit tightening in China & its impact on plastics demand.
Coupled with the extensive discussion of the key issues and challenges affecting the olefins and polyolefins industry across Asia, the 12th Asia Olefins & Polyolefins Markets conference is the must-attend event for all executives with a stake in the latest Olefins & Polyolefins trends.

Olefins & Polyolefins-Europe, Asia, International (O&P-EAI) – The primary products of this segment include ethylene and its co-products (propylene and butadiene), polyethylene, polypropylene, global polypropylene compounds, Catalloy process resins and Polybutene-1 resins.
Polyethylene and polypropylene results were approximately equal to the prior period while PP compounding profits increased approximately $10 million from fourth quarter 2010 primarily as a result of increased volumes. An $82 million dividend received from our Saudi Ethylene and Polyethylene Company joint venture accounted for the majority of the $96 million of dividends received from joint ventures during the first quarter 2010.

According to Chris Hogan, managing director of the olefins and polyolefins unit of Noble Group, global markets for polyolefins will continue to grow, but the world’s balance will increasingly shift from North America and Europe to Asia and the Middle East.
During his address at a recent forum, Mr. Hogan predicted that global polyolefin production should increase by 5 percent a year from 2011-14, which may be outpaced by rapidly growing Asian consumption. To quote, Mr. Hogan said “There’s been increased investment in the Middle East and Asia, and consolidation in Western Europe and North America."
With these industry developments in mind, leading plastics industry experts are heading down to the 12th Asia Olefins &Polyolefins Markets conference held in Shanghai on 21-22 June 2011, to discuss the shifts & outlook for the global olefins & polyolefins trade scenario. Key on this year’s agenda will be presentations on the supply/demand market dynamics in Asia and Middle East, country-focused growth forecasts as well as pricing trends.

Polyethylene (PE) demand in China (measured as local production plus imports minus exports) rose 13% to 17.4 mln tons while polypropylene (PP) demand increased by 6% to 13.9 mln tons fortifying the country's position as the largest polyolefin consumer and importer in the world. Data from the Chinese customs showed that the country imported 1.384 mln tons of low-density PE (LDPE), 2.478 mln tons of linear-low density PE (LLDPE), 3.495 mln tons of high-density PE (HDPE) and 4.8 mln tons of PP in 2010.
