Chile is on course to introduce a new recycling laws for six priority products (packaging, tyres, batteries, lubricating oils, electrical and electronic items), which obligates the producers to take care of the waste these goods cause. How will this law be implemented and what are the plans in place to establish "an appropriate infrastructure for the separation and subsequent safe disposal or reuse of recyclable materials”. What is the impact on brand-owners & converters of packaging products?

In line with the circular economy, businesses around the world are trying to reduce, reuse and recycle in order to eliminate the amount of plastic packaging sent to landfills. For example, Unilever announced that, by 2025, all their plastic packaging will be reusable, recyclable or compostable, and 25% of it will come from recycled plastic content. In PepsiCo Latin America Beverages (LAB), 92.9 percent of the materials used are recyclable. By 2025, 100 percent of its packaging will be recyclable.

With the ambitious target from brand-owners for recycled content in their products, are there enough rPET in the market and at what price? How will the  virgin PET market perform? It is noted that some PET producers are integrating into the mechanical recycling area while some are exploring the chemical recycling route, how will this trend disrupt the dynamics of the PET industry?

Mexico’s major PET manufacturer has expanded its recycling business by signing an agreement with Perpetual Recycling Solutions to acquire a PET recycling plant in Richmond, Indiana, USA.
 
Alpek is committed to use more recycled PET into virgin resins and the new acquisition will complement its food-grade PET recycling operations in Argentina and its fiber-grade PET recycling joint venture facility in Fayetteville, North Carolina, USA.
 
The recycling plant in Indiana has an annual installed capacity to produce about 45,000 tons of high-quality recycled PET flakes.
 
Mexico already boasts of a PET recycling rate of approximately 60% - roughly double that of the United States, but the rates have struggled to grow. Most recycled PET produced in Mexico is used locally, while some are exported to the USA and Europe.
 
In terms of PET demand, Mexico saw a 3% increase in 2018. While bottled water growth remained strong, the carbonated soft drink market was flat. Demand for hot-fill products such as sports drinks was strong with 4% growth.

Colombia produces about 4,000 million PET containers in a year - most of which ends up in landfills and water bodies. However, about 25% of this PET waste is recycled by Enka at its recycling facility in the outskirts of Medellin. It recycles 1,000 million containers per year produced in Colombia.
 
The PET containers are recycled into new plastic containers, textile fibers as well as tarpaulins that are used for 6 "nylon tires.
 
Most of the recycled PET plastics packaging material from Colombia are used by the bottling companies in the country. Meanwhile the industrial nylon 6 threads are exported, mainly to the American continent.
 
The fibers and textile filaments are exported to USA, Brazil, Argentina and others, where the recycled materials are used to manufacture sportswear, underwear and outerwear, etc.
 
The recycled resins have the same properties as virgin resins. Until recently, Enka did not recycle labels and bottle caps, however, with new machines it is now recycling 100 per cent of the packaging materials.

Plastic packaging manufacturer Petainer and BLUE PET (its Brazilian partner) have begun manufacturing one-way PET kegs at its new blow moulding plant in Brazil. Located in Tijucas, Santa Catarina, in the South of Brazil, the new facility has a production line for petainerKegs that will cater to customers in Brazil as well as other South American countries.
 
One-way kegs have become increasingly popular among South American breweries as they are used only once and can be fully recycled while also reducing costly and complex return logistics and washing processes. One-way kegs also provide enhanced product protection as it ensures that the beer is as good as the day it was brewed for over nine months. In addition, the facility in Brazil will help reduce supply costs to local South American breweries.
 
Currently, 30L petainerKeg Classic are being manufactured in the new plant with plans to produce more from the portfolio.
 
Petainer kegs were launched in Brazil about 1 and a half years ago and the market has quickly embraced one-way kegs enabling the company to establish a full in-country manufacturing line of its kegs.
