Sony to eliminate plastic packaging, starting with phones and earbuds ~ Nikkei Asia, Nov 2022 Michelman India – Food services look to paper-based packaging ~ Packaging South Asia, March 2022 India bans single-use plastic to combat pollution ~ Reuters, July 2022 Nestlé puts freeze on plastic pollution in Hong Kong with new paper packaging for KitKat ice cream ~ Food Ingredient First, July 2022 Paper and fiber based packaging is gaining popularity as the world moves away from single-use plastics. Conveniently recyclable and reusable, fiber-based packaging is a natural and sustainable alternative to fossil-based materials. To meet functional demand requirement, the fiber based packaging supply chain is anchoring partnerships, in R&D and etc, to commercialise performance paper or fiber based packaging solution coupled with functional barrier properties, durability, heat sealability, suitable for both food and non-food applications. Food-contact compliant and safety is key priority for paperboard and fiber packaging. Ensuring sustainability, functionality and recyclability (or compostability) of the barrier fiber packaging are increasingly pertinent requirements too, and this is set to disrupt the entire value chain for the next few years. With the surge in demand for sustainable packaging solutions with protective packaging characteristics (e.g. logistics friendly), it’s not surprising that current demand is outpacing production for molded fiber packaging products. And not to mention PFAS-free fiber packaging for food contact application too. Beyond just woody pulp and paper, Asia being well endowed with agricultural wealth, offers various fiber raw material from bamboo, bagasse, empty fruit bunches, etc. Circular economy of packaging aims for full recyclability of packaging materials disposed, and ease of existing paper waste recycling stream.
