Can compostable plastics be the substitution to the hard to recycled flexible, multilayer plastics?

Today, most of the compostable packaging is designed for industrial processes - ideally in-vessel composting. With such energy intensive process, what does the LCA data reveal on the environmental impacts of these materials.

The year 2023 was supposed to bring a deposit return scheme, extended producer responsibility (EPR) for packaging and legislation for mandatory separate food waste collections, none of which will happen now until 2025.

It is anticipated that discussion will continue in 2024 on reforms in the new [EPR] scheme’s with the industry and reduce the costs of implementation wherever possible.
