As of 2024, the circular plastics packaging markets in South and Central America continue to experience notable shifts driven by environmental concerns, regulatory changes, and evolving consumer preferences. Governments across the region are increasingly recognizing the urgency of addressing plastic pollution and are implementing measures to promote a circular economy.

The governments of Colombia, Jamaica and Panama are launching a US$42 million project to jointly combat plastic pollution by mainstreaming circularity at city-level.

Consumers are becoming more conscious of their environmental footprint, driving demand for eco-friendly packaging solutions. This has led to a surge in innovation within the industry, with companies investing in research and development to create recyclable, compostable, and biodegradable packaging alternatives. Additionally, collaborations between government bodies, industry players, and NGOs are fostering the development of infrastructure for plastic collection, sorting, and recycling.

In Brazil, Nestlé has partnered with the Recicleiros Cidades project. This initiative provides job training, promotes consumer recycling education and implements waste collection infrastructure in 11 Brazilian states. Waste collection partnership projects supported by Nestlé in Brazil today empower more than 8000 recycling professionals.

Despite these advancements, challenges remain, including insufficient recycling infrastructure in many regions, limited access to recycling facilities, and the need for greater public awareness and education on recycling practices.
