CAN WE CHANGE OR SUBSTITUTE SOME OF THE HIGH-PRICED GRAINS?

  • Cereal grains have all increased in price and the industry is looking for alternatives.  In the first part of the paper we will look at some of the concerns in the energy component of diets with a focus on rising feed fat prices and how they affect cereal choices.
  • There are increasing quantities of pulses such as field peas, faba beans, chickpeas and lupins which while better known as protein sources also play a role in supplying energy to feeds and will reduce the corn or wheat levels
  • Finally we will examine some cereal by-products that can replace both corn and soybean meal in practical diets with reasonable cost reduction while maintaining animal performance

EVALUATING PROTEIN MEALS TO MAXIMISE PROFIT IN YOUR PURCHASING OPERATION
