B2B Japan – Vietnam Annual Exchange (Separately Bookable Workshop)

28 Nov 2024, 02:15 - 05:15pm

Enhancing the quality and promoting sustainability of Vietnam – Japan’s wood pellets production and trade

Introduction
Japan is Vietnam’s most important market for wood pellets. Vietnam is the Japan’s largest wood pellet provider. As Japan’s future demand on the product will increase there are ample opportunities to expand the trade between the two countries.

According to Vietnam’s customs data in 2023 Vietnam exported 2.8 million tonnes of wood pellets products to Japan, worth nearly $440 million US (FOB Vietnam). In the first half of 2024, the export volume and value reached 1.4 million tons and nearly $211 million US respectively. The export has been on the rise.

However, there exist several factors that have threatened the sustainability of this trade. Firstly, recent incidents in some energy facilities using Vietnam’s wood pellets have raised concerns about the quality of product. Secondly, companies exported wood pellets to Japan manage to use several certification systems to prove sustainability in the absence of unified view from the Japanese side. Thirdly, Vietnamese manufacturers and exporters particularly SMEs have had from little information to no information about the dynamics of market including future demand and legality /sustainability requirements from Japan. Finally, Japanese pellet consumers have little information regarding Vietnam’s pellet supply chains including feedstocks of Vietnam’s wood pellets. These factors constitute various types of risk for the bilateral trade.

With support from Forest Trends, Vietnam’s Wood Pellets Association (VWPA) and Japan’s Biomass Power Association (BPA) have been organizing annual exchange for their members to better understand about the supply chains and market and to facilitate sustainable trade between the two countries.

From Vietnam side, there will be representatives from Vietnam’s Department of Forestry, Vietnam’s Timber and Forest Products Association (VIFOREST), and 25-30 CEOs of Vietnamese manufacturers /exporters. From Japan side, there will be 10-15 representatives who are members of BPA to attend.

Attendance at this workshop is free for all participants at 8th Biomass & BioEnergy Asia.  Contact Vietnam Wood Pellet Association (Ms. Mai Duong at mai.duong@smartwoods.com.vn) for more details and registration.

Objectives
This B2B exchange aims to:

  • Deepen understanding of the participants particularly the Japanese participants concerning Vietnam’s wood pellet supply chains, with a particular focus on key aspects such as Vietnam’s timber legality, sustainable certification, feedstock, and quality.
  • Equip Vietnamese manufacturers /exporters with information regarding Japan’s market dynamics and legality /sustainability requirements.
  • Discuss solutions for addressing existing issues that hamper the development and sustainability of the trade.
