The flexible packaging market in Latin America is undergoing a transformation, fueled by a convergence of factors and trends that highlight the region's dynamic packaging landscape. The flexible packaging industry is primarily driven by the increasing need for convenient and lightweight packaging solutions. Furthermore, a growing trend is a greater emphasis on sustainability. Consumers and businesses are driving the need for eco-friendly and recyclable materials as they become more aware of their environmental impact. This environmental focus extends to biodegradable packaging solutions, reflecting the region's dedication to responsible packaging. In addition, the food and beverage industry in Latin America plays a pivotal role in propelling the flexible packaging market forward.

The growth of the e-commerce sector is another important trend increasing demand for flexible packaging. The advent of online shopping, fueled by greater internet penetration and smartphone usage, has resulted in a spike in the use of flexible packaging for products supplied via e-commerce channels. Pouches, in particular, are becoming increasingly popular for cosmetic and personal care products sold online.

Production techniques are also improving to reduce water use and carbon footprint, in line with the increasing global emphasis on environmentally friendly practices. Despite the growing use of flexible packaging, traditional collection and mechanical recycling pose many challenges. The diversity of materials used, such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), barrier materials, coatings, inks and adhesives present obstacles in scaling recycling effort. Is advanced recycling the solution for flexible packaging? Or the shift to mono-materials solutions gaining popularity? What is the eco-design guidelines for flexible packaging?

Join CMT’s Sustainable Flexible Packaging LATAM, supported by ECOCE, held in Mexico City on 12-13 Nov 2024.
