Taiwan's Renewable Heat & Power: The Solid Biofuel Opportunity

While Taiwan has made significant progress in power decarbonization, industrial heat remains a major bottleneck in achieving net-zero emissions. For heavy industries and manufacturing sectors requiring high-temperature steam, solid biofuel is not merely an alternative energy source; it is a drop-in solution that offers carbon neutrality under international greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting standards.
 
Taiwan's regulatory framework is actively evolving to incentivize biomass application. The implementation of the carbon fee system and coal-reduction policies is fundamentally shifting economic incentives, effectively closing the price gap between coal and biomass. Concurrently, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) is planning Feed-in Tariff (FIT) incentives for co-firing biomass in fossil fuel boilers. Furthermore, to address global carbon tariffs and RE100 commitments, high-tech industries, led by TSMC, have begun mandating the use of green energy across their supply chains. Driven by both policy and market forces, the industrial sector's green transition is accelerating, leading to a surging demand for solid biofuels.
