"Innovating for profitability – the 2020 vision!"

The Asia Pacific animal feed market is expected to reach a market size of US$140 billion in 2024 from US$110 billion in 2018.

Demand for meat and seafood in Asia is set to grow by 78 per cent by 2050, and global food security is becoming "an increasingly pressing issue" with the world's population set to hit 9.8 billion the same year. To meet the challenges of food and nutritional needs in a sustainable manner, new and innovative measures are required.

ASF has taken its toll on the animal feed market as the decline in pork production in China and other impacted countries has meant less demand for pig feed production. According to Rabobank, hog feed consumption is expected to drop by 30% this year. There is likely to be less demand for grains and crops, such as corn, as well as whey powder for piglet feed. Soybean meal usage could potentially only experience a modest decline due to a growing poultry sector. The positive news is that the hog feed industry is expecting to see a slight recovery by 2020, much sooner than the pig population will be able to recover.

Increasing concerns towards disease outbreaks in livestock suffering from swine flu, bird flu, infections and avian influenza should drive demand for animal feed additives. Increasing concern for meat & meat products safety and quality also prompt growing demand for specialty additives adding to global demand.

Evonik commissions second feed additive plant in Singapore

Posted on : 02 Jul, 2019

Evonik has commissioned the second complex for its feed additive - MetAMINO® (DL-methionine) at Singapore’s Jurong Island, recently. The new plant is located adjacent to its old plant at the island and will have an annual production capacity of 150,000 metric tons of DL-methionine raising its global capacity to about 730,000 metric tons. The first plant already has a capacity of 150,000 metric tons of DL-methionine.

Built at a cost of half a billion euros, the new complex is modelled on the successful existing plant on Jurong island. As Asia has a growing demand for animal protein - meat, eggs, milk and fish producers are increasingly focusing on more sustainable production, and the new feed additive plays a key role in supporting these efforts.

The feed additive - DL-methionine is an essential amino acid that is added to poultry and pig feed. It helps to reduce the crude protein content in the feed which is beneficial for animal organisms while also reducing the impact on the environment. The feed additive offers a sustainable supply of animal protein for the world’s growing population.

Apart from Singapore, Evonik produces the feed additive at its plants in Antwerp (Belgium), Wesseling/Cologne (Germany) and Mobile (Alabama, USA).

Find out more about feed additives market trends at CMT’s 4th Global Feed Summit on 19-20 November, 2019 in Bangkok.
